We Start Nine Seniors on Defense?

I just don't think we have good athletes on defense. UT just wasnt recruiting at a high level when we got these guys and they are the best we can do at the moment. the freshman on campus and players coming in will be an upgrade in general.
You would be correct!

That’s b.s. You don’t pay a coach $9 million to recruit clowns. You don’t pay him five million to do that.

I think we definitely have room to get more athletic on the back end, but there are plenty of teams with guys who graded out lower as recruits but perform much better on the field. We need to be faster on the back end but the soft tackling, arm tackles, and what we’ve seen with DBs trying to rip the ball away rather than wrapping up is technique and hunger, not just a lack of athleticism
Surely you don’t expect that poor little millionaire to actually earn his damn money and coach?

Thought I heard that

Is it true?

Incredible they play that bad.

Man, we are going to be in trouble next year with them being gone.

Also, will OLs Mays and Mincey leave?
I mean when you leave your defense on the field 23+ minutes the first half they are gonna be worn down. Florida had a game plan to eat up clock and when they rolled out the Defense they were rested and it showed.

You think Banks and Martinez taught Hadden not to wrap up? Be serious....
He's been playing for them going on 3 years now. Yes, that is on the coach. Although, that style of tackling seems to be the new normal for secondary folks. I see it all the time.

Everyone keeps throwing Martinez in there. Position coaches teach technique. He had nothing to do with Banks' choice to play so soft against UF in the first half or to make no adjustments until half. He doesn't call the plays. He just teaches guys how they're supposed to play the position.

I haven't bought in on Banks from the start. I just didn't see signs that he was getting the most out of his unit. I heard the same old tired excuses used for Jones, Dooley, Pruitt, et al... "you have to wait until he gets more talent". Great coaches make their talent better than the sum of its players. Just not seeing that from Banks.
Exactly. FL had a horrendous offseason. They managed to make us look inadequate on both sides of the ball for a team that is very Sr. and returning player heavy. I have a lot of concerns going forward.

I'm going to say one thing about the defense last weekend that I have a theory about...... I think with our lack of depth, they were a bit gassed.

I think it's coaching malpractice to let an FCS team that lost to Southern Illinois by 4 TDS run 75 plays and possess the ball for 40 minutes against your (mostly) first team defense. I don't buy the idea that these games are to "work on" something or "keep the playbook closed" or whatever. Score as much as you can, as soon as you can and get your starters out of the ballgame.

If we come out against UTSA and fart around again and have starters playing deep into the game then I might lose my mind. We have a stretch of 8 games after UTSA and 6 of them are losable. We need to get on the board early and often and get the young guys some reps.

They’re poorly coached banks and martinez are awful and always have been
The more I watch the DBs play and how our defense is designed, the more I realize it is just crap scheme and coaching. Our defense is so overly complicated yet outdated. We guard space instead of receivers. We sit in a zone defending nothing while receivers run wide open. At one point last week, with 5 DBs on the field, we reacted to motion by putting Herring on a motioning WR and leaving the DB in the box.
It is just crazy stuff.
