We Weren’t Good This Year

We just weren’t. Beck torched us. The Ohio State QB torched us. Our pass defense was horrible all year. Heupel is kinda vanilla. So uninspired at times. I don’t blame this on the players really. If Michigan’s d can slow down Ohio State, why couldn’t we? So bad on both sides of the ball. I’m speechless. It’s really inexcusable. We played so bad in the first half all season. That’s not on the players. I think Heupel is a good coach. He’s not great. Day out coached him, and Day is not great. We need a great one. Heupel was a good stop gap. It’s time to go in a different direction. That was absolutely pathetic.

So dumb. We were good this year. Just not good enough to win a national title.

And there is no crime in that. We’ll be back.

Curious. Four years ago, we were a dumpster fire. Now we're in the playoffs. One of 12. How is that inexcusable? Incredible yes, but inexcusable...nah.

It's called critical thinking skills. If you follow recruiting, you would know that our roster is limited. There's a drop-off from RB1 to RB2. There are deficiencies at LB, especially in coverage. There are speed issues at Safety. If any "fan" thought that it would be fixed in 4 years, those fans are delusional. As a fan, I hope to win every game. When we don't, I'm disappointed but I know what we have. The people that only follow practices and games don't understand what we need. Their answer is to fire coaches, which isn't going to fix the roster. Consistency and recruiting will fix the roster, elite recruiting. There is a big difference in a good LB and an elite LB.
I'm not expecting or demanding the coach and team be undefeated and win the NC in 4 years, but It gets old being reminded how bad we were a few years ago as our only bar for measuring where we are as a program. Winning big games makes it easier to recruit better players as they want to come to a winning program. The only thing we were consistent in this year was being inconsistent. I'm not calling for anyone to be fired, but the play calling and game preparation has sucked for a while now.

Every team at this level, other than one, will finish the season w/ a loss. Amazing how some fail to realize that and forget where were just 4 years ago.

For those that want to move on from Heupel, what would the plan be? Who would you get ? How do you entice a better coach than Heupel to come here after he just made the College football playoff, beat Bama twice, beat Florida twice , Orange and Citrus Bowl wins, has won 30 games in the last 3 years. Yeah let’s fire that guy. I’m sure all the good coaches will be banging on our door to sign a contract w/ a monster buyout. Even Auburn fans think that would be insane .

This year, the VOLS were an over-rated team that played some great quarters and some horrible quarters. They were shallow and inconsistent. They did not belong on that field last night… that was painfully clear.

I had moments of great frustration and great happiness this season. As a fan I want to see more consistency against the good teams from my team.

This staff needs to reflect inwardly and figure out how they move this program forward. I believe they will. This off-season and next season is going to be very telling about Huepels future in college football.

This year
Beat 2 of our Big 3.
Went 10-2 made the College Playoffs
6-2 SEC

In the end it’s a good year!

We were a little smoke and mirrors and our schedule was favorable overall.

Needs to compete at a higher level
Upgrade at receiver
LB core thin (need another Pili type)
With Sampson gone I think 🤔 we need better RB

Last night 2 things

Ohio State super talented and played well-How much easier is Nico job throwing to those WR? Their just better than we are right now.

Injuries were devastating last night
-Sampson
-squirrel
-Thornton
How many other games would we not be as good in and may have lost if Sampson hadn’t played?

It was so fun all year to have that exciting nervous feeling the whole year, that you still had a shot at it all. Cheers all!

Anyone who thinks we should move on from Heupel is a delusional fool and should not be taken seriously.

We just played in our first, significant postseason game in over two decades. We just came up short. I’m excited about the future.

Vols weren't as good as their record indicated, OSU was better than theirs. The talent gap was as painfully obvious as the last decade of recruiting rankings would show. Heupel's scheme on offense and Banks' scheme on defense were completely exploited by the OSU coordinators. Overall, a 10-win season with a playoff berth will get people raises - not demand changes be made.
How did their D coordinator scheme to exploit our offense? What I thought I watched was a 4 man D line consistently whip our O line and blow up our offense. If my linemen are considerably better than your linemen, then I don’t need any special plan to win that matchup. JMO

We were slightly above average.

Vol W = NC State (Overall 6-6, Conference 3-5)
Vol W = Oklahoma (Overall 6-6, Conference 2-6)
Vol L = Arkansas (Overall 6-6, Conference 3-5)
Vol W = Florida (Overall 8-5, Conference 4-4)
Vol W = Alabama (Overall 9-3, Conference 5-3)
Vol W = Kentucky (Overall 4-8, Conference 1-7)
Vol W = Miss State (Overall 2-10, Conference 0-8)
Vol L = Georgia (Overall 11-2, Conference 6-2)
Vol W = Vanderbilt (Overall 6-6, Conference 3-5)

Not counting games against the Sisterhood for the Blind!

6 of 9 victories were against teams .500 or below in their conference. Plus 6 of 9 teams played were .500 or below overall. That is weak sauce. Throw in the fact that our play was very inconsistent this year there are red flags all over the place. It should not be a surprise to anyone that we got shelled last night.

This team has been inconsistent all year when it counted. Losing to Ark exposed us, Losing to an average Georgia team exposed us. Giving up 14 pts to Vandy in the first 5 minutes exposed us. You can give up 14 points early to a Vandy team, but not to top level teams like Ohio St.. Agree that not sure who could have beat this Ohio St team playing like they did.
Georgia is far from average

That’s just dumb, Tennessee won 10 regular season games which is something we haven’t done regularly until Heupel since Fulmer left. We aren’t NC level good but we had a good season. We have some major holes that need to be addressed on the coaching staff and players positions. Tim Banks is terrible against good teams, Martinez is way past his prime, and I am not sold on Halzel in the least. Tennessee does not have the money to compete with the top echelon teams regardless of what this board believes or we wouldn’t continually miss out on top transfers.

I’ll take 10 wins seasons every time, no matter how they happen. With that being said, the offensive stalls all season long made me as frustrated as watching the ‘02 and ‘05 teams

I agree. We really kind of hit our ceiling with this team. There's no shame in it. We were a pretty good team and not a great one. I hope we can tighten up and go again next year, we should have a chance to get back in.

In 2021, could anyone have imagined reading a post on VolNation complaining about a season in which Tennessee beat Alabama and Florida .... and made it into a 12 team playoff tournament for the National Championship? Probably not, since there wasn't such a thing back then .... but just examine how Heupel has changed the culture here.

That goes both ways, in 2021, would you have thought AL would lose 3 regular season games? In 2021, would you have thought FL would have 3 of 4 losing seasons? Its great that TN is winning these games but given the circumstances one could say if TN did not win those games we are just free falling. AL & FL are historical rivals but does not mean they are talented as teams in years past.

You know I can talk myself into thinking we could beat Georgia in a rematch on a neutral field. I might be delusional in that thinking. I never felt we had an answer for their WRs though tonight. I mean they could pretty much get a first down anytime they wanted for the most part. We just never really had a chance. Ohio state is damn good but it felt like some guys mailed it in or maybe the flu rumored was true? Who knows but healthy or not didn’t seem like tonight it would have mattered.
I agree with this 100%. The Vols looked wounded from the get go….. throw in no Sampson….. essentially no Thornton…. Injuries on the oline…. Something was definitely off.

We won 10 games we were pretty good

But we weren't great or championship caliber: loss to Arkansas, needed OT at home to beat a terrible Florida team, couldnt hang with UGA etc.

Agreed, but they need to start by playing the 1st round games at regional neutral sites
Exactly, that is an extreme advantage to the home team! And I think they also should be in a dome. The fans and players deserve a decent environment to play in. Who wants to drive miles, pay high tickets, suffer jacked-up hotel and restaurant fees ? Then freeze their asses off for 3-4 hours? 🤔 :mad:This is suppose to be a reward to the players and fans, not torture. I know it won't change, and I also know I will watch the games from the comfort of my living room until they do. ;)Hell most of the domes are vacant most of the year anyway!
