More than one recruit has been told this...that for TN to turn the page we must win with in state talent.

I think he gets it--AGAIN.

We need men who bleed orange.

Who step on that field and get goose bumps when they hear Rocky Top and can't help but wooing because their soul cries out with pride.

People who want to get to the NFL and don't care about TN will never claw, scratch, and fight for that extra yard a way a kid who bleeds Orange will. It's just a fact.

Butch wants kids who will give their all for TN.

Again--He gets it!

You've got to have the mix. You need to get the top the state can produce, and you've got to supplement it with out of state talent.

Last year was the most depressing I have ever seen with regard to in-state recruiting, as we were either bleeding them out of state or losing them to Vandy. But I can't blame the players...who wanted to play for Dooley?

I agree about getting the in state talent, but we need over half from out of state to be competitive. Out of state kids can bleed orange as well as the TN kids. In state kids are just easier to recruit because of familiarity with the program, expectations of those around them and sometimes distance.

If we rely solely...even mostly on in state talent we will get destroyed! We still need to recruit nationally. We need to get get players from all over the country and then cherry pick the best players from Tennessee.

I think Hightower to Bama opened some eyes a few years ago...it is not so much that we get ALL players from here...we know there isn't enough talent...but we have to get the 7 or 8 that the rest of the country wants...that is Maxim #1.

You sure? Trying to remember the starters and thinking of Tee, peerless, Henry, Goodrich, Bryson, etc and not sure outside of Al Wilson who was from tn. Maybe some linemen.

He is right. Your big name guys like Martin, Henry, Wilson etc. were not in-state but a solid 1/3 was in-state. IMO, the in-state talent is vastly better now than even 5 years ago. Hell, the only undefeated team and the nations best defense starts a freshman at DB, one Jalen Ramsey of Brentwood. Spend sometime watching them and you will see he is a stud. Would have helped stopped a lot of runs to the outside opposite of sutton.

It helps that our talent pool is increasing.

Talent has always been here. I posted this on another thread the other day. Al Wilson, Scott Wells, Bubba Miller, Chad Clifton, Jeff Smith, Jason Laymen, little man Stewart, Charles McRae, John Henderson, Scott Gallyon and on and on...
Also many other great HS kids went to Auburn, Bama, Ole Miss ...

The instate talent seems to be up in the 2014 class. There have been upticks like this in the past but nothing sustainable. What hurt UTK was losing Garner and then having people like Butch Davis, Spurrier, Dabo and Richt cut off the spigot in some of the border areas where we used to clean house. Memphis recruiting is too dirty for a program on probation to play ball so we're not going to do much damage there save for the rare Shelby County VFL. The Big 12 is a mess and we might make some hay in Texas if we work it.

I have heard this crap for years. Don't have room to list all the outstanding players who played at UT who were from Tennessee. Many of them were not listed among the elites at the time of recruiting because we had too many idiots running around saying "Tennessee does not have the talent".

We have a lot of talent in state, and we finally have a coach and staff intelligent enough to see it, as well as not listening to the naysayers who want to sing that worn out song.

Butch will load up with Tennessee players and will prove we have talent.

I have no problem getting great players from other states, but it is very important we do not miss all the great players in Tennessee.

Go Vols, and Go Butch!

We DO have SOME in-state talent yes! But not enough elite talent to fill the majority of an 85 man roster. You're fooling yourself if you think we can be like Texas, Florida, or Georgia and just pick players out of our own backyard and compete in this league! We do need to get the elite players that come from our state but we also need to recruit nationally .
