"We Win With In State Talent"

More than one recruit has been told this...that for TN to turn the page we must win with in state talent.

I think he gets it--AGAIN.

We need men who bleed orange.

Who step on that field and get goose bumps when they hear Rocky Top and can't help but wooing because their soul cries out with pride.

People who want to get to the NFL and don't care about TN will never claw, scratch, and fight for that extra yard a way a kid who bleeds Orange will. It's just a fact.

Butch wants kids who will give their all for TN.

Again--He gets it!

Nothing wrong with taking in state players when they are the most talented... not sure If we can do it without some major help.

lets not get carried away with were they come from results in how they play.
Peyton Manning is a vol from NOLA, Cam Clear was from our beloved state and not sure he was ever all vol

You sure? Trying to remember the starters and thinking of Tee, peerless, Henry, Goodrich, Bryson, etc and not sure outside of Al Wilson who was from tn. Maybe some linemen.

Al Wilson, Chad Clifton, Spencer Riley, Cedrick Wilson, Andre Lott, Eric Westmoreland, Travis Stephens, Jermaine Copeland, Will Bartholomew, Mikki Allen and Jeff Hall were all major contributors to the '98 team and from Tennessee....We also need to get back to owning Georgia where Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, Deon Grant, Fred White and Steve Johnson were from.

Our last great in state class was 2007.

A terrible class in general and there was nothing special about the in-state kids. I think Chris Walker might have been the only TN kid to ever see meaningful playing time from that class.

Hopefully this class is nothing like the '07 class.

Its really cool to see most of our best instate players want to stay home and play for the Vols. Hopefully down the road they can look back and say we were the class that put TN back on the map

You serious, Clark? Butch has owned Georgia about as much as anyone could have in one year on the job. Tell me if these names ring a bell: Sutton, Dobbs, Lambert, McDowell, Berry, Brown, Paulk.

UT needs to get the best talent from Tennessee....., and Georgia. Oh, and NC and SC.
That is all.

Al wilson
Eric westmoreland
Chad Clifton
Spencer Riley
Jeremaine Copeland
Cedric Wilson
Mikki Allen
Jeff Hall
Gerald Griffin
Austin Kemp
All contributors in 98. About a third of the 2 deep

On roster and became major contributors in future years
Travis Stephens
Will Bartholomew
John Henderson
Teddy Gaines
Andre Lott
Will Offenhousle

Stephens started 2 or 3 games that year, and had over 100 yards rushing against UGA. Bartholomew didn't start, but he contributed a lot.

Won't happen with Tennessee players alone

Not even teams in talent rich states like Florida, Georgia, and Alabama win with only in state talent

Texas is the only one I know that the majority of players come from within the state.

Its a nice quote, but not practical

We'd be wise to remember recruiting in 2014 is a bit different than 1994,when all of the 1998 seniors were signed..Talent pool in state is deeper now than it was then, but is it so good here that we should take any player in state over a similar player Out Of State and risk burning bridges we might have built as a national recruiting type program?

I do agree that you can't be competitive getting all your talent from one state. I think thats a given. And I do not think that was the OPs point.

I think that it is remarkable that UT has locked like 7 or 8 (something like that) of the top 15 recruits from our state though.

The in state recruits make a huge difference when they have grown up around UT fans and Tennessee football. Their mental model of the magnitude of Tennesse footaball is much greater in most cases.

Why does that matter? It gives you the edge on the "I want it more" plays. More is at stake to those guys. Its the fourth and 1 plays. It's trying to stop a team on 4th and 1 plays when alot is on the line.

So.. when you have a surge of talent in state like this 2014 class you better have the skills and the relationships built to grab them because it can make a huge difference in your program IMHO.

The timing was great for a coach to come on board who had a vision of locking down the state and recruiting more inside the boarders.

I believe it adds more credibility to your program also. If the best players from your state don't believe in your team and want to be a part, why in the world would someone from outside the state?

I would like to see Tennessee pursue more in state talent. I think Auburn's team has a ton of in states. Tennessee high schools are producing a overall better quality of football players.
