Weapons for self defense outside of US

I'd assume that most places outside America hate Americans, so giving them possible reasoning to arrest you is probably not the greatest idea. No weapons may legitimately be a safer move just because you don't want to risk some random law locking you up for some period of time

You would ass-u-me wrong.

I'd have assumed just barely over half the globe hates Americans

You would be very wrong in that assumption. There is a strong dislike for certain Americans who act like horses butts when travelling abroad, but if you are polite and treat people kindly, you get a great reception. That has been my experience across Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia, haven't been to South America nor Antarctica so can't vouch for those continents.

As far as the OP and defending yourself...

Where are you going and are you going by yourself?

I was figuring on my small Swiss army to be plenty..once again I don't think I painted myself as Rambo that wants to travel with a 10 inch k bar on my hip it was a basic question if anyone had any time with a small blade outside the states.. just a small tidbit we were visiting my brother in law in Nicaragua and were robbed by our taxi driver in broad day light. I'm not gunna be walking around with a team USA shirt on I stick to pretty casual wear as is. I don't think it's out of the norm to carry a small pocket knife in Europe.

Lots of people carry pocket knives, but don't count on it in self defense. Cutting or stabbing someone is hard and even harder with a 3 inch blade. Plus, I'm betting you haven't trained on using a knife in self defense so chances are you wouldn't be that effective. Same with anything else you might want to carry--no training, means you may as well leave it behind.

For defense against a robbery, always carry a muggers wallet. That is an old wallet with a small amount of cash and maybe an expired credit card or driver license. Enough to make it look like your actual wallet. You give that to the robber while you keep your actual wallet/money hidden.

For the most part, just don't be stupid. Seriously that is the best advice.

I'm thinking the American they hate more than most is the one who asks about what weapons are most appropriate to bring into their country

I'm going to assume that you aren't the kind of person that would carry a weapon in the first place for your own protection so I don't think the place really matters to you. We're traveling to Europe, I'm a ccw here in the states. I d like to be able to have a small pocket knife or small baton for evening time walks with my wife. I don't live under the assumption that everywhere I go isn't "safe" but I think you fail to realize there are bad people everywhere and it can't hurt to be prepared for an altercation.

This time next week we'll be on our way to Johannesburg, South Africa so I get what you mean.

Personal or business?

Not the safest place to visit.

Personal. Taking kids to see where they were born. Just going to be there a week seeing the sites. Jo'berg, Soweto, Nelson Mandela's home, Apartheid Museum and then an overnight in a cabin in the Rhino and Lion Preserve (Not the Lion Park where the lady was killed last week!).

Sounds like an interesting trip. I know a dude from SA, no idea what part but he says it's beautiful but he's been here for 20-30 years.

This. Seriously, just be cool. Somehow, the vast majority of people in the world are still decent if you're decent with them. Be a part of their world as best you can and you won't have any issues. And be aware of your surroundings.

If you want a "local" knife, maybe an Opinel?

We had a nuke exercise with a couple of French outfits and damn near every one of those guys carried one. They used them at almost every meal too. I really liked them and ordered a couple for myself.
