Have we noticed how big college football and basketball staffs have become? It wasn't that long ago that you had a head and two assistants
for basketball. Now, the men's BB program has a total staff numbering 12! There is Barnes, 4 assistants/associates, and then a support staff of 8--player development, recruiting, trainer, video and analytics (all paid), along with 3 graduate assistants. The professionalization of college sports continues apace--and absurdly so. I remember watching BB games the last few years--any major team--and when they cut to a shot to the bench area, there would a phalanx of people in coaching staff shirts surrounding the head coach. A small army! Have they carved out a position for Person Who Ties the Players' Shoelaces yet?
I've written Caldwell and ask if she could find the money for a new paid position: Person Who Repeats the Coach's Instructions, Praise and Complaints. Often, amid the shouts of players and the thumping of balls and other ambient noise, the coach, standing off to the side, will make various comments and instructions pertaining to drills, technique, positioning, etc--and yet the players don't often hear the comments that well. Thus someone should be positioned--with a bullhorn--halfway between the players and the coach, and whenever the coach makes a comment or yells in anger or encouragement, the Person Who Repeats the Coach's Instructions and Complaints echoes the remark. Clear communication...it's paramount!
And the football staff? I just counted--it's 51. Totally absurd.
