well considering he wasn't hired until the 27th, there's 4 days right there. And as for your comment about him not wanting to recruit just top 100 players, how is that any different from dooley's comments when he was hired about not wanting to go after all the 5-stars bc they carry too much baggage? Weak argument, imo. I say get the players that want to play here, the 3 and 4 stars, build a team, and the championships will follow. all you guys still whining about this hire and telling everyone what ccm should have and shouldn't have done to this point amaze me with your ignorance.

i am not impressed with how cuanzo has handled the ware jones situation.... i think that retaining their services is vastly more important than hanging out in houston at the final four, presumably in search of assistants... seeing as how he hired two miss st assistants anyway, it seems to me he could have just as easily accomplished that from knoxville, or georgia (Ware) or memphis(Jones). when he was hired on the 27th there was some initial contact(presumably a courtesy call) then he went quiet on our two critical needs for next year... according to jones... he was unable to contact cuanzo or hamilton for three days, .... i would understand the young man's concern about his future.. the following link delineates the contact/quiet/dead periods for bb
2010-11 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Recruiting Calendar
a simple flight to atlanta then memphis on the 28th may have sent the proper message to recruits that TN is committed to them and still wants them.... even if contact was limited.. cuanzo could have contacted their high school coach/ principal and left contact info such as phone #'s, email, facebook, twitter, and any and all contact info permissible to the ncaa at the various times available in the recruiting calender... to me it looks bad that he's at the final four when there are more pressing issues back home... if it was to retain coaches then why do you need to go there to hire two assistants that have already worked for you... if its to accept a coaching award then why not fly down the day before and spend those three critical days getting your house in order first... i hope he's not in over his head here.. didn't seem very accustomed to a fifty reporter press conference... i hope he hasnt alienated our only hopes to field an even average bb team next year... 1st weeks performance= Fail

Wahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is easy to sit at our keyboards and cast verbal stones when we don't have the information that CM has at his disposal nor accountability for success. Doing what he is doing to put a successful program together may not, in his estimation, include groveling to a teenager and wasting a scholly on someone who probably won't qualify academically.

He might also conclude that if he successfully recruits this kid, and he gets into school, he will constantly be on the verge of being suspended for academic or other reasons throughout his career. He also believes he needs to attend to more important business and can persuade the kid to recommit if there is a mutual agreement to do so. CM still holds the LOI and has time to either convince him to keep his commitment, let him continue to flunk out or just go away. The long term success of the program does not revolve around one teenager.

I think this is most likely the most correct answer. Different coaches do thing in different ways. I think this coach wants to set the tone from the beginning. HE will be in charge, not the players. If he does not set this precedent now, it will be hard to do at a later date, and this particular recruit will be a problem as long as he is at UT.

I personally want him to come here, but not if he constantly going to try to run the program. I am on Cuonzo's side at this juncture.

Does this dead period apply to both signed and unsigned players. Does it make a different if they have already signed their LOI. I dont see why it would be a problem if they are already signed. Its not like u could gain some kind of edge in recruiting a kid if he is already yours.

Its amazing how some know more about coaching than the coaches themselves ... if it was left to them we'd be slammed with violations all year.

I agree with the sentiment of the OP. The biggest task facing a new coach is getting that first recruiting class to recommit. Most of these coaches bring many of their assistant coaches with them. IMO it's easier to find assistant coaches then top basketball recruits.

jones statements of attempted contact might not be true.. but if so how could hamilton get word to him.... look son, we are coming up on a dead period.. we plan to release you from your loi but you're still our top priority.. coach will contact you at the first available opportunity.... would it be illegal to contact a coach and tell him to relay such info to a person already signed? NCAA rules are very tricky and if they have done all they can to contact him i'd stand corrected... but have they?

How do you know he hasn't done this? Does he have to inform you and everyone else what he has done? All you have is what some immature teenager has said. UT is holding the LOI, so the smart play is to sit down with the kid at the right time and discuss it with him. It would be irresponsible for a COACH to over react to a PLAYER's threats. I do not want a coach who will cave at players' hissy fits. Would you?

Well guess he wanted to go to the final four once and figured this was his only chance.

Your right, his team's back-to-back conference championships and elite eight appearance mean nothing since Purdue didn't get to the final four in 94 or 95. As an assistant one Purdue team repeated an elite eight appearance, but not good enough to make the final foursome.

Mike Hamilton gets his ideas from VN (sic) and tells CM what to do.

For everyone's information it possible CM was in Houston to receive the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year award Friday evening. In his first unofficial win over an SEC opponent he beat out the likes of Bama's Anthony Grant for the award.

Not accustomed to a fifty reporter press conference? The man played at Purdue side by side with his roomate, Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson and ultimately a coach there for 9 years. He has been in rooms with many reporters.

Regarding the two kids you are after, I have no idea what is going on there. Reading that link on when and when not to contact kids is interesting. It does seem like a coach can at least make phone calls though. Let's stay tuned and see how it all shakes out. Good luck. I am a Zo fan and hope that your program flourishes.

he'll be walking on hot coals if he replicates the record here he had in his first year at missouri state.. that said , the subsequent turnaround was impressive... some say that that conference is pretty tough... if so then winning the title this year should have gotten them into the tournament unless the conf rpi is so low that it prevented them from making the field... if that's the case then it wouldn't be a strong conference tho

He inherited a practically empty cupboard of talent when he came to MSU and went from an 11 win first season to a 24 win one and then 26 this past season. The Missouri Valley conference has been a very good mid-major conference and been going through a down spell the last couple of years. However, the season's conference champ has gotten an at-large bid (not counting winning conf tourney) for the last 18 years until this year. Many of us feel this had a lot to do with Zo leaving. If you beat Creighton, Wichita State, and Northern Iowa on the road, win 25 games and conference title and fall in the conf tourney championship game in the final seconds and STILL cannot get an at-large bid, what more can you do, but leave?

In 2006 the MVC had 4 teams in the big dance and MSU got snubbed, even with a 21 RPI. The ACC had 4 teams in that year and no way was a mid-major conference going to get more than them.

The man can coach and will be getting even better by the year as he is still young. Shaka and the gang got a lot of spotlight and probably will be going big time, but remember, he coached a team in a dinky conference and finished 4th! Caught lightning in a bottle and had a great tourney run....but when the smoke clears, give me Zo over Shaka any day! Remember the Heath guy from Kent St. that was all the rave during the tournament and got the Arkansas gig when Nolan Richardson had a falling out? He flamed out at the big school and ultimately was canned. I sense the same situation looms for a lot of the mid-major coaches that get hot in the tournament.

Have you every considered that CCM may not care if we sign these two or not....to be quite honest with you I have just about changed my feelings on it as well....I know these two are kids, but they haven't handled their end very well either.....Not for sure they are the type of kids CCM really wants to deal with for several years....Now I hope I'm wrong and we sign both and they become good upstanding VFLers ....but don't hold that breathe very long....Just my opinion...

So are you intentionally trying to be an @$$hole or is it natural? The man pointed out that Missouri State University is not in Mississippi. Yes, it is a small school compared to the SEC institutions, but 22,000 students, a Division 1 competitor, one of the nicest arenas in the nation, etc.....calls for a little civility if not basic respect. That is what I've always known about the south since my parents are from Memphis (my dad knew Elvis as a kid, but that's for another board or thread), basic respect. Are you not one of those southern gentlemen I have always heard about?

Did Bruce screwing you guys over make you so bitter? Please don't take it out on an up and coming coach that does things the right way and a person you would want your son to play for, or the institution that helped with his nurturing enough to qualify him to be at your place.

Good post. Just remember this is a very small portion of our fanbase that you are talking about. I am excited about Coach Martin....sounds like a man of great character. Sounds like a great young coach and I am more than ready to see what he can do. Our fans have just been through so much with Kiffin and now the Pearl situation. We now have 2 men of great character with Dooley and Martin. Now we just need time to turn our programs around. Go Vols!

No reason not to give Martin the benefit of the doubt that he can and will bring winning basketball to UT and that he will recruit and win with honor. He has done absolutely nothing to warrant bashing him before he signs a single recruit or coaches a single game.

27th thru 30th is three days to make an impression on some very freaked out student athletes worried about their futures... dooley does recruit five star athletes .. we just didn't score any.. calling someone ignorant who simply questions a coach who ignores jones attempts to contact him might be a better definition of ignorance... turning down 2 top 100 players when truying to beat ky and fla might be another... Fail

We get it. You THINK you know better than the head coach of our Vols. Tell us again where you played and coached
