Welcome Home, Mike Keith

Color me in ORANGE shock. Never thought this would be in play enough to have prejudged this. Anyway, welcome home.

Have always appreciated his side jobs on signing days, etc. but have not been an unabashed fan of his Titans play by play. Have him on the clock, bet that has him worried.

Who had to pull this off? It has to be considered a win I would think.

Edited to add….. evidently I muddled his bio with David Keith, evidently his cousin. Knew of a Keith estate sale off Chapman Hwy just a few years back. Best I can find is Chattanooga elementary years and BGA HS. Can’t fill in the blanks till UT.
What happened to David Keith? He made that awful movie in Knoxville after Officer and a Gentleman and then just disappeared. He dated a Vol cheerleader for a while. Don't know if he married her or not

I like MIke in his interviews but not a fan of his style on game day. Just a personal preference. I don't know how good he's going to be calling basketball either. He'll probably have to really work on that

This. I appreciate his love of the Vols but I’m not a fan of broadcasters who, in my view, overreact to what goes on on the field or on the court. There is a difference between genuine enthusiasm and trying to make the play about the broadcaster. Mike’s screech of ssssaaaacccckkk is just too much for me

I agree with the poster that it’s a personal preference and in a clear minority here.

Right, but Keith was the choice that would please the most. I agree about Bob, good but not great, but not being great isn’t a crime. Keith annoys me sometimes but I think it’s a slam dunk hire. There will never be another John Ward, and I think fans need to stop making that comparison and hating on guys just because they aren’t him. Bama has a clown making up things about other schools and doubling down, so there are much worse play by play guys out there.
Mike Keith will be as close to being John Ward as anyone. I can't wait to listen to radio again

As far as the skillful part of it, but another part of why those of us who grew up with Ward treasure him so much, is the nostalgic element. I associate that voice with so many memories as I grew up and where I was when I heard those calls. Nothing will replace that, and I think that’s part of why so many have been so vocal about Kesling , like when a kids Mom gets remarried and the kid says “you’ll never be my Dad!”. Then the guy says “I don’t want to replace your Dad, I just want to be your friend”. Sorry, that last part was me being stupid, I just wanted to use the metaphor.

Sacks are crucial plays. They usually end drives and can easily be game changing.

This is the thing for me. I think some - not all, but some - who aren't particularly fond of his "saaaack!" call will feel slightly different about it when it means the Vols have sacked an opposing quarterback. Maybe not enough to be okay with it, or maybe not all at once, but it's funny how much people can come to love things when it's relevant to their interests. I think hearing something that means the UT defense has planted their opponent five to ten lines behind the LOS just might change their minds a little.

Me personally, I'm wondering if he won't change it up just a big for the call. Rather than just saying "saaack!" maybe he'll change it up, and say "BIG ORANGE saaack!" or "SACKED -- by the BIG ORANGE" or something similar. But I also wouldn't mind it one bit if he kept his personality about it, and just yelled "saaack!" There's something fun about it being a signature, so keeping it as is would work for me too. Very interested to see - err, hear - what he does.

I didn't really think Mike Keith would ever leave the Titans. It is a much easier gig than being the Voice of the Vols. He will be on the air a whole lot more.
I'm excited to listen to the Vols on the radio again. I have only listened when I am in the car for a very long time.
Anxious to see who is our color commentator. Mike being in the play by play chair will be a big factor that will enable us to get someone really good.

I think Mike needs to leave a bit of the Titans radio dramatics in Nashville as a Titans thing. As much as I love enthusiasm, he can rebrand himself a bit for the Big Orange. The "sack" dramatization, has a bit of John Ward influence, but he could stand to drop that mess. I can live with it though, because he is a consummate professional and prepares better than anyone in the business. These are traits that I know he learned from John Ward. He does his homework and is very knowledgeable and prepared. No one can compete with him in the country in this arena

For anyone who didn't see the interview this might ease some of the saaaaack! concerns. He did it in a meaningless preseason game late when all the backups were playing. It was kinda a joke. Apparently his daughter loved it (she was very young) so he continued to do it as a shout out to her. I think learning the meaning behind it makes it more bearable. I personally love it, but some don't. I get it.

Yes, it's annoying. And Touchdown Titan screech even worse. Kessling was very good at refraining from injecting emotion into a game and keeping the focus on what was happening on the court or field. Bertlecamp's Money is just the right balance. He's excited but hits the note and gets off it.

Kesling was very good at putting us to sleep! Boring!!!!

John Ward would use "SACKED" but not to the level of Mike. I also miss Ward's "No, No No! They POUNDED him!!!"

Jack Fleming did WVU football and Pittsburgh Steeler football at the same time.
Bill Hillgrove did Pitt football, Pitt basketball, and Steeler football at the same time.

Ahh, The Farm, one of the worst movies ever. That movie was shot in Tellico Plains. Keith bought a farm along Tellico River a couple miles downriver from the town. That became the backdrop for the movie. He owned that property for a long time before selling it a few years ago. I still have a VHS somewhere. The intro was an aerial view of the old white farmhouse and surrounding area, including our farm, which was adjacent to his property.

I don't believe in blue font. The best sarcasm is always tinged with some element of doubt.
Exactly. If the reader cannot figure it out from context and phrasing, they are too reactionary to be reading it. "Oh, but you can't see the writers face or hear their tone of voice," they say. As an example, John Adams's sarcasm comes through loud and clear without benefit of either.

He stayed in Knoxville after graduating until 1997 when he moved back to Nashville to join the Titans organization. His Grandparents went to Knox High and his parents went to Fulton. A little Wikipedia clarification.
