We're gonna have to learn how to be graceful winners again, it seems

There is an art to being at the top of the game (any game). The very best of the best do it in a way that not only deserves recognition for their excellence, but also appreciation for their humanity.

A big part of that for the Vols fan base is going to be recognizing talent in our opponents and rivals. Case in point:

Bama is a hell of a good team. Bryce Young is certainly one of the best three quarterbacks in the college game. He impressed me hugely yesterday. Hendon's better, but there's not a wide gulf between those two talented lads.

And Gibbs is an amazingly talented back.

Henry To'o To'o is a very good linebacker, and "QB of the defense." He's smart, quick, and capable. And don't impugn his values too badly; remember, we likely sent him away from Knoxville, he probably did not leave willingly. "Traitor" is too easy a word to use, and very likely does not fit him. Yes, yes, he could definitely have picked a better destination when he was shown the door. But being offered a spot on the (then) best team in the nation is hard for a young man to pass up, esp. when he's suddenly homeless.

Nick Saban is the greatest college coach in history. I say that objectively, looking at the cold, hard facts. We may not like him, he may not be the most charming man or the warmest personality, but he is without a doubt a living, walking legend of the sport.

And the Bama fan base may not be very sophisticated, but they are loud and loyal (you know, minus the bandwagon fans, we're going to have our share of those too, so best not to throw stones at other people's glass houses). And they're actually more football-savvy than most other fan bases.

I have a lot of respect for the Alabama program. Hate them, want to stomp them into the mud every single time we meet, but respect the hell out of them, too.

And I really appreciate being in the SEC, best league in college sports. I love our traditions. I love our rivalries, and our competitiveness. I'm proud of little brother Kentucky for rising so high (we're going to crush them, but still proud of them). I appreciate UGa for the business-like nature of their rise in the East; Smart is a very good coach, and their roster is maybe the most talented in the country. Florida are an amazing rival to have, they're fun to hate and have good (though wardrobe-deficient) people. Shane Beamer's a good dude, so is Mark Stoops, and Sam Pittman, too. Lane Kiffin and the Pirate Leach are hilarious down in Mississippi. I adore the people of LSU.

It's good to be rising to the top of such a storied and rich community.

Go Vols!
What a douche post after the biggest win since possibly 1998. Oh and Too Too is hughly overrated along with Anderson. Young and Gibbs are outstanding

Ah yes, the pearl clutching and virtue signaling begins. Lots of assumptions in your post that you should also admit you don’t have a clue are true or not.

Be responsible for yourself and stop presuming you know the best way to act and how all of these people mentioned truly are. This is just as bad as the people you are trying to rail against in this post.
There was no pearl clutching there. He was saying get ready to be good for a long, long time... at least that's how I took it.

Respectfully disagree. That post smacked of telling people how to think, how to feel, how to celebrate and rewriting history that the OP doesn’t truly know either all in an attempt to frame our monumental victory last night as some indictment against our fan base for being excited and celebrating. OP is not the fan base police or the high priest of fan behavior.

News flash: there are bad parts of every single fan base, they make all of a given fan base look bad at times, unfairly for sure. But our fans going wild last night isn’t the hill to die on to make this statement.

To the original poster - I would like to understand what you would consider disrespectful? Rushing the field wasn't disrespectful! Smoking the cigars was not disrespectful - I was a Legion Field several years back and all the Bama fans around me lite one up! Fans celebrating and being happy over what is the biggest win in many years is not disrespectful!

What makes college football better than the NFL, in my opinion, is the excitement that comes from the students - both current and former and the fans who are connected because it is their community- their state!

College football in some places is also like an extension of Friday night lights - only played on Saturday and for higher stakes!

I have never been a fan of the "act like you've been there" phrase. We should celebrate every win like it was the first - because it could be the last for a long time.

If you think, for one minute, that bammer "wins with grace" or has even an ounce of class, you are high as ****. I live amongst the gumps. They are the trashiest, most uninformed knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing ignorant pack of morons in the entire universe. The special sauce is a particular blend of arrogance and ignorance. If you don't believe me, just listend to Finebaum even once.

I respect nothing about them. Saban cheated his way to the best talent in history. Did you know that bammer had 8 5 stars to our 2, and 90 4 stars to our 45? That's right. Even against other top SEC teams, they typically have a 2-1 ratio of top talent. Recent exceptions of uga and LSU in 2019 speak for themselves. Why do you think Saban was butt hurt about Tamu's recruiting success last year? Because that ****ing arrogant sawed off POS knows the jig is up. He can't just dominate other teams with raw talent anymore.

I do give him credit for one thing...he gets a lot out of his talent. They do execute, they are disciplined. But...ANY-****ING-BODY could win with the ridiculous talent they have assembled over the years, and you have to the dumbest ,most naive hick not to believe they weren't cheating their asses off. Meanwhile, Saban walks around like a god among men (which the trash bammer fanbase mostly believes he is, they probably have altars to him in their houses), berating the press, acting like the d-bag he is, and we have had to just take it until now.

Class? You can take "bammer class" and shove it RIGHT UP THEIR ****ING ARSES, which we did yesterday!

Respect? Now that the talent is more even, I want to see Saban retire in disgrace after repeated humiliations.

**** bammer! Period, dot. That is all.

And you know what you can do with your lecture also. :p

Whilst I agree with many of your sentiments, especially how tough and amazing Young was, and your comments are well said and should be said - the moment you try to guilt others to endorse that opinion or be ashamed, you cross the line from laudable to deplorable.

Too many here and in the far stretches of Volnation have suffered too long to so easily pour cold politeness on the still burning fires of their rival hatred. After just arriving near the top of the mountain after a long exhausting climb, they cannot be expected to act like those who have long been camped there.

In short, your sentiments are admirable when you express them for yourself, but lose all their their potency and turn sour when you try to impose them on others.

Gibbs looked like a punk ducking out of bounds on his long run. I didnt even hear Henry's name til he started cramping up and Saban visibly aged during the game last night. I aint gotta give them props for nothin.

Young did however play a great game and is tough as nails.

Young would look great in a Steelers uniform🤞

I'm gonna keep privately trashing Alabama all day. I normally don't do it too publically because I am a teacher.

**** being graceful though. To put in perspective how long it's been, the 2006 W over Alabama was back when I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT BAND WAS BECAUSE I WAS A DUMBASS ELEMNTARY SCHOOLER, AND I AM NOW A HIGH SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR.

And yeah, I get what you say. Some of the responses don't surprise me at all. We're not going to become classy all at once. It will have to come with time. But needed to get the chip on the table early, so the discussion can begin.

Do you think your ‘chip on the table’ even aids in modifying the behavior of the fans on this forum, let alone the fan base as a whole?
