What’s the floor and what’s the ceiling?

Depending on our schedule next year and with many new starters including QB, I wouldn’t be surprised if we stumbled to a 7-5 record. I expect better seasons after that. I think Nico has a lot of potential to be a great SEC QB but a great coach once said, “Potential is the most overused word in sports.”.

You have to consider the ebbs and flows of recruiting and whether you get your guys and they can properly adapt to the system. Considering that the QB is the most vital piece to the offense Heupel runs: 21-22 was kind of a crap shoot because you were working with mostly transfer portal players, and things worked out well. We got Nico and I think the plan was always have him sit for a year--everyone should know that that does good things for the development of players. I think things are going to really start to take off when Heupel and the staff can get into a consistent recruiting groove of targeting the players they want an having a more established "next man up" roster. Nico will be ready next year, and we landed Jake Merklinger. So on and so forth.

All that said, starting next year, I'm thinking 8-4/9-3 seasons are going to be the standard floor. And I think Heupel and Heupel and staff are going to get us to consistent 10-11 win seasons. The ceiling is going to be the CFP.

I do believe CJH is the right guy, but we are going to have to be willing to play the long game here. Last year notwithstanding, Tennessee has never been an overnight sensation program. People quickly forget, it took Fulmer 5 seasons to finally win the SEC and that was built on a foundation that took Majors several years to establish. It was also during a time when the SEC as a whole was down. We very well may have to endure several seasons of 8-4, 9-3, etc. before our program is finally in a position to seriously contend for Championships.

Now of course, that was all before NIL and the transfer portal era, so we'll have to see how that plays out but remember, every other program can use those things too. Plus, factor in that Texas and Oklahoma are about to move into the league and things are going to get even tougher.
Fulmer was the main and only reason for Majors success. Had it not been for Fulmer, Majors would not have had all of those SEC championships.

If only we had given him a sabbatical!

I’m counting a bowl game so I say 10-3 is the ceiling…the floor is tough to swallow but we could drop games to Kentucky, Missouri and Georgia and play uninspired in a crappy bowl to go 7-5…that would suck. This team needs to finish strong and get 10 wins

I’m not sure who all can remember the coaching search that landed us CJH, but the candidates considered were meant to raise the floor of the program. Assessing where the program is, the floor has objectively been raised. It looks like the Tennessee of the early 2000s, but not the one of the 90s, yet. Looking at recruiting since CJH has shown up, the numbers are similar to Clemson from 2012-2019. However, I cannot find where a program has amassed quarterback talent like Tennessee, assuming they sign Merklinger and Mctyner. The closest comparison would be the first few years of Texas A&M under Sumlin, but even their talent wouldn’t match Tennessee’s. So, the question is, what is Tennessee’s ceiling under Heup? I would guess it is the Clemson of the last decade. What’s your projection for the next 5 to 10 years? Can he make it that long?

No, nuh-uh! We're not doing that! Majors turned Indiana State around. A program that was a never was and Majors made them respectable! Fulmer wasn't there for that. Majors won a natty at Pitt. Fulmer wasn't there for that either. I'm not denying that Fulmer was an asset on Major's staff but you saying that Majors was only successful because of Fulmer and he somehow wouldn't have been if it was anyone else is a distortion of the truth. That's revisionist history and marginalizing Major's accomplishments.
