I don't get this fired up over NASCAR much anymore because I'm used to their stupid calls. But I can't bite my tongue this time. They have said REPEATEDLY that on the last lap anything goes and the yellow line rules do not pertain. I have heard this at every plate race since they put the yellow line rule into effect and heard them mention it during the Truck race yesterday. Then all of a sudden when someone makes the pass under the yellow line for the win this year its not legal and they give the win to Stewart.

Look, I like Stewart so this has nothing to do with that. I just can't believe how much gray area crap NASCAR uses anymore to get the results they want. Yes, I will flat say they gave that win to Stewart for whatever reason and he did not deserve it. You can't change the rules in the middle or after a race just because it doesn't go the way you want it to. This is the biggest joke call I've ever seen and I really feel sorry for Smith because he won that race fair and square - and by the rules NASCAR sets. They say anything goes on the last lap and then when someone makes a pass below the line on the last lap they all of a sudden say that it was an illegal pass - BULLCRAP. This truly sickens me because I felt like I got ripped off after watching a good race. There was a ton of passing today and good racing and then it had to be tarnished by a stupid call. BOOOOOOOOOOOO NASCAR you once again give yourself a great PR move.

Direct quote taken after the Craftsman Truck 07 Daytona race:

OUT OF BOUNDS: Drivers throughout the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series garage were still talking about last week's three-wide finish at Daytona International Speedway.
While they admitted the finish was good for television, most wondered why NASCAR allowed Johnny Benson to drive below the yellow line - Daytona's out of bounds line - to jump from third to second in the final 200 yards.
Benson wasn't penalized because "if you can see the checkered flag on the last lap, anything goes," according to NASCAR spokesman Owen Kearns.

From another forum and very interesting......

It was after the race. Jimmie Johnson asked if Regan had won the race, and Chad responded that no, Tony did since Regan had passed below the yellow. That's when Jimmie said that they had specifically asked for clarification of that rule and been told that it was okay as long as you could see the checkers. Chad replied that it looked like they were going to give it to Tony anyway, and Jimmie said something like they needed to talk to Helton about that.

According to the radio, the NASCAR hauler is full of people protesting. NASCAR has gotten themselves in a pickle. If it is indeed illegal to pass below the yellow line, Regan Smith needs to be pushed back in the field somewhere, but I suspect Jimmie wasn't the only one who heard that clarification. They can't just allow Smith 2nd if that is truly against the rules, but if it's okay on the final lap as even the commentators were saying, they'd have to admit that they'd just awarded the race to the wrong guy.

The reason why Kyle won the first Dega race this year is because he passed below the line.

Is there a way DEI can appeal? I love Tony and all, but Regan was in a bad spot. Cause a multi-car wreck, get out of the throttle and lose tons of spots, or win the race. Nascar cheated him. Jimmie Johnson had that clarified to him. If if was anyone other than Regan Smith the other guy would have won. What a joke!!!

they have to do the right thing and award it to Smith.

Tony Stewart-2 time champ, Home Depot Sponsor, etc.

Regan Smith-rookie driver, not popular, part time sponsors, etc.

In their eyes they did. It's all about money.

Jim Hunter has been called out by more than one media network. The best they can do is move Regan up to 2nd.

If I was Max Seigel I'd use every campaign possible to convince Nascar to change it. He already has one good thing going for him, Jimmie Johnson.

Another interesting post:

I dug up another confirmation of the "flag in sight rule" from a more senior member of NASCAR (who speaks for all of NASCAR, not just the Trucks):

"He said the yellow line rule includes a caveat. 'When the drivers can see the checkered flag, you can get all you can get,' he said."

David Poole quoting Ramsey Poston, NASCAR's managing director of corporate communications, a guest on his Sirius Radio show.

if I were Regan I wouldve been doing burnouts right beside Tony, ala Robby Gordon.... Tony wins his first race at dega on his last try with Gibbs, great storyline nascar

I think it is a travesty, if the two cars were reversed in the way they finished, I have no doubt the win would have gone to Stewart too. NASCAR wanted the more popular driver to win, and/or felt they owed something to him, or they wanted another contender in the Chase.

Regan Smith won this race, plain and simple. He and DEI were screwed royally.

Regan got the shaft yesterday. They put him at the tail end of the longest line. 18th place i think. They could have at least give him second. That was a royal screw job.

On a side note. There hasn't been one decent restrictor plate race all year. I think they've all either ended in a big pile up or green, white, checker. These are the races i have the most interest in and they've all sucked.

NASCAR.COM - Stewart wins after NASCAR disallows Smith's pass - Oct 5, 2008

NASCAR.COM : Video <-- Video of Pass

In this article it talks about Stewart losing at Daytona because of passing below the yellow line. It also mentions the ruling during the truck series race going the other way. I wanted Tony to Win but I admit I am biased. IMO Nascar is inconsistant at best when it comes to this situation. I don't care really which way they rule, just be consistant about it. That is only fair.

We must have watched different races. How can you call all the lead changes, 3 & 4 wide racing with such a close finish not a good race. I do agree it would have been better without that last "big one".

Agreed.

If that race didn't keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end then Nascar might not be for you. I thought it was one of the most exciting races of the year. When a guy can get shuffled back to about 18th and can come back to the front in a few laps with 3 wide racing, That is what it's all about boys! It sure kept my interest. When you see cars 3 wide being braided diving to the left and to the right making moves, you know at any second the next move could start total carnage on the Racetrack. That is as good as it gets, besides my driver winning the race, of course!

I guess if putting on a show is your idea of entertainment. But when it gets time to go they all end up in a pile. Exciting would be having more than ten cars finish one of these races. I hate the COT car. I liked it back when they had different makes and people would whine about who had the best car. That was nascar.

Talladega is the best track on the circuit to attend a race. everybody who is a fan of NASCAR needs to at least get down there for the whole weekend once.

next to the Indy 500, it's my second most anticipated race i go to on a regular basis.

I couldn't agree more.

The current leadership is ruining Nascar:bad:

Just to be accurate, there were still 18 cars on the lead lap at the finish even with the wrecks.

I agree 100% about when the cars looked like the actual cars that were sold at the dealerships. That will be my bitch until they ever bring them back. More than likely I'll die first.

I went to dega the last year they ran 17 to 1 compression. Rbroyles i believe it had to be 1996 or 1997. I can't remember, it could have possibly been 1995, but i think thats to early. Anyway i can remember a four car breakaway of gordon, martin, earnhardt, and i want to say jarrett. I tell you what it was the last year they had the july race or was it june?

Either way it was so hot that day, that we drank three of the biggest drinks we could get before the race got started. It was so hot i had water blisters come up on my arms.

I can remember that four car breakaway was averaging 204 mph. It was the best race i ever witnessed. Gordy took it home. Thats the only part i didn't like. I haven't been back since. I'am glad i got to see it before they stopped running 17 to 1. That race was unreal.
