What a shame...

Name one stand out, game changing play AJ has made since he's been here?

Crickets chirping.
AJ is a solid player who would do better as a MLB in the 4-3. Will make lots of tackles in the run defense. Under Chavis he'd be a rush end.

The six rushing TDs are irrelevant as the team is grouped by position. Rushing TDs don't factor in to one's performance at LB.

While it's true that he had a ton of tackles, many of those tackles came on big plays by the offense. It's not Johnson's fault that he played on a crap defense, but there several LBs more deserving than him.

AJ lacking in pass coverage was not his only problem. He had some big problems with covering his gaps, he consistently had serious issues with coming off blocks, and had zero ability to run any one down. He had a good TFL in Kentucky game but that was one of few. Maggitt healthy seems far more capable. I do think scheme was a big variable in his deficiencies as he looked better last year. He would flourish as a MLB but not as an end in a 4-3, he cannot shed blocks.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Since he was on a horrible defense that got no pass rush from the defensive line and close to zero pass coverage from the secondary...he gets no merit for what he did this year what so ever. A.J. had to pick up the slack .

I agree that he had to be the playmaker for UT, but did he truly excel? What game-changing plays did he make? Yes, he made tackles when his teammates were missing them, but tackling is job one. That's basic stuff. It's all the other stuff that separates the great players from the above average.

He lead the league in tackles because our defense was on the field so much. His speed will have to improve a lot or hell get exposed in the big leagues. He's a first and second down lb right now.

That A.J. Johnson was left off all of the All SEC teams. This kid is a monster. Led the SEC in tackles and also had 6 rushing TDs. Gimme a break. He was the only positive on the defense.

All of his tackles were 10 yards down field. Needs more speed to be elite. JMO

You should have made a point in your post. Instead it sounds like complaining about complaining.

AJ in no way deserved all-conference. Go back and watch those games. You know all those big runs we gave up? A lot of those were because of AJ's inability to read a play and get off a block. Start for Bama? Maybe on their scout team. His number of tackles is extremely misleading. He has a long ways to go but I think he has the capability of becoming one of the top 5 LBs in the SEC by his senior year.

AJ had great stats.

AJ also was a contributor to many of UT's problems due to being caught out of position and overrunning plays. His stat line would not have been as good but the D would have been better if he had filled his gaps more consistently rather than trying to make every play himself.

This. Plus AJ's stats benefited from the incompetence around him.

I see he made second team as named by the coaches. Imagine that. People who are payed to coach the sport thought he was pretty darn good. But they certainly know less than the naysayer keyboard coaches I'm seeing in this thread.

While this thread has included some interesting back-and-forth jabbering, in particular between some loyal Vol fans and a worthless bammer who seems to have gotten lost from his own team's websites, I just switched over here from the UT Sports website where it shows that AJ was selected for the coaches 2nd team All-SEC.

Way to go, AJ, and all of the other All-SEC Vols!

And if the worthless bammer takes offense to my name calling - screw him (or her). If you don't want to be called names, go back to a bammer website where all of you idiots can drool all over each other. And I've earned the right to call a bammer a bammer: despite being an orange-blooded, Tennessee-born, UT alumnus ('83), I've lived roughly half of my life in Alabama (north of the Tennessee river). My sons go to Auburn and are dyed-in-the-wool UT fans. Unfortunately with the state of affairs these past few years, we feel like we've died and gone to He!!. But don't you worry, bammer fan, Satan won't be around forever. And BTW, I've never been to a bammer website and never will.

It s very brave of you to introduce facts into the argument.

pretty tough talk for a 2-poster

Hey, normally I just sit back and enjoy the entertainment, but when a bammer starts talking smack (which they do all the time), sometimes I can't sit on my hands. As you can see in my bio data, I live in Huntsville. I interact with people from all over the SEC and nation on a daily basis and I can assure you from first hand experience, bammer fans are the most arrogant and obnoxious people you'll ever meet. Don't get me wrong, some of my good friends are bammers (then again, they actually WENT TO SCHOOL in T-town). Most of the rest of these idiots never set foot on a college campus, much less UA.
