What are Recruits Thinking

Why don't we have more recruits from TN? You can't tell me that there aren't good players from the Memphis, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, and even Williamson county areas...

Ole Miss, MSU, Ark, and Bama are closer in the spectrum of distance and Memphis is quite a different fan base....:hi:

I've seen a couple people say that some recruits like to stay close to home... Why don't we have more recruits from TN? You can't tell me that there aren't good players from the Memphis, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, and even Williamson county areas. I understand that LA, GA, AL, and CA are hotbeds but our school is in dadgum TN! ALSO, our campus is crap in comparison to other schools like AU, so maybe UT should focus on making the campus a little cleaner or at least make the sidewalks match....

Ohhh... I get it. Sarcasm. Nice.

If they're talented it doesn't matter where they play......they'll make it to the NFL

Ok, I follow recruiting pretty close and let me first say that I am very pleased at the path our coaches are on. We are still in on several big recruits and have assembled a respectable class to this point. The reason I feel compelled to post this is that as I watche the Army AA Game today, I just cant help but wonder what the heck some recruits are thinking. I understand recruits jumping on the the Oregon and Auburn band wagon to a point and I understand recruits commited to power programs that have established NFL pipelines. What I fail to understand is how players commit to programs with no future. Look at WR Singleton who commited to Ole Miss. They are coming off a horrible season and they have not been relavent in college football for decades. They have no offensive plays or a QB to make things happen. He will end up with no future and never get drafted. Look out LB Townsend. Cleamson is the yearly underachiever who does nothing. Their coaching staff is a joke and most likely will not be there in another year. Look at a stud like DE Bowers and tell me how he helped himself by committing to Cleamson two years ago. Now look at Tennessee, a DC who turned down Texas and a pro style OC and a proven OB. It is a program that will put players in position to prove their skills. Why would either of these too players go anywhere else. Ok, rant over. :loco:

We do have Dooley's wife; I hear she is a well established "doc." :)

That's true. I just don't get why our other 4/5 TN players are only from right around the campus. I just feel like they should stretch out into the other 2/3 of the state. It's whatever though... Dr. Dooley knows more about recruiting than me and I got faith that he's gonna heal this team.

I like the name hah. People might really think you're him after his public jabs at this site.

You have to admit that you can affect your draft stock a little easier on defense. As a receiver your qb can make or break you and ole miss has no real future there right now.

Have you ever heard of Mike Wallace for the Pittsburgh Steelers?

If you have the talent it makes no difference whatsoever what college you attend. The NFL is loaded with players from schools few have ever even heard of outside their own fan base. Bottom line if you attend a power program in college you will get more publicity but the NFL finds and drafts the best talent be it Bama or Bedrock. Athletes know this too, therefore there are many other considerations that go into a kid's decision where to spend his college years.

This is a good summary of what needed to be said. There are many different reasons for top talent choosing schools that aren't exactly relevant in the BCS picture. Family connections (like legacies), proximity to home, education (not normally the case), etc. Sometimes playing for a huge institution with a lot of tradition isn't always what a prospect looks for.

I kind of like our entrance by running through the T! So kissing a rock and running down a hill sounds like you'd sprain an ankle!?

I like it as well but if you watch any pre game shows for Clemson their entrance is always shown, not so much for UT. Kids see this and think this is a way to be on TV. Also the ACC is not as good as the SEC, so getting to a BCS game at Clemson is ALOT easier than at UT. When you have Bama and Florida to play every year, then throw in maybe an LSU, Auburn, etc that makes it alot harder

Well Tennessee isn't exactly a football powerhouse anymore so no need to lob insults at other programs who have a mediocre record. Our last few Bowl games have certainly been forgettable. I love the Vols as much as anybody, but there are other schools with "great names" out there such as: Michigan, etc..... that don't compel you to enroll unless your parents are Alumni. A lot of it is about Playing Time, too!!

No like the guy said top 3. Every mock draft i've seen has AJ Green going to the Panthers.

Not me...every one I see says top 4 but few say #1 overall

Georgia WR A.J. Green will forgo his senior season and enter the 2011 NFL draft.

It's finally official, as college's best wide receiver will take his talents to the NFL. ESPN's Adam Schefter calls Green "the anti-Luck decision for a top pick," though if Carolina brings in Chargers DC Ron Rivera as their head coach, they may snag Clemson DE Da'Quan Bowers at No. 1 overall. Green won't drop past Cincinnati at No. 4 overall.

I hear whar you are saying, but it's not always about pure football or making it to the NFL. Some kids have family problems and want to be close to home. Others may have friends or girlfriends that go to that school. And people may not believe it but alot of these kids are smart and look at academics more than you think. Not necessarilly academic prestige, but if that school even offers a major in what you are wanting to study. I was recruited to some smaller schools back in the day, and granted I was in a different situation cause I would have never went pro, but if schools didn't have what I wanted to study, I put them way down on the list.
