What are your pet peeves?

My pet peeve is when there is traffic and people who aren't in a hurry don't GAF about paying attention to how they can do their part to optimize traffic. When the light turns green, I am ready and don't allow a gap in front of me that would mean a car behind me doesn't get through the light. It's really just common courtesy. And you got people who will allow a 5 car gap because they're on their phone, or whatever. Crucify them.

And conversely, I really appreciate people who I can see are on the ball. The other day, I let 2 people in and as I started to let in the 2nd guy, he wasn't expecting the generosity, so he wasn't ready to go. Then I'm thinking, "oh no, I'm gonna let in this 1 guy in and it's going to cost 5 people behind me." But then he noticed, punches it, immediately closes the gap, and then I close behind him, and nobody behind me suffered. He understood the assignment. That was 4 weeks ago and I still think about that guy.
And for inexplicable reasons it is pretty rare to find someone who is on the ball. Nobody likes sitting in traffic, right? So why is it that after you've sat at a light for 10 minutes and you are near the front of the line, why so few cars are right on the rear bumper of the car in front of them to make sure that they get through? Cars leave huge gaps as you mentioned, all the time, and it ends up in them (and everyone else) having to sit through another cycle at the light.

I don't expect the average motorist to care about optimizing overall traffic flow, but don't they want to ensure that they get through? If so, get on the ass of the car in front of you to make sure! And it ends up helping everyone.

People that don’t know how to navigate a 4 (3) way stop and act like they’re doing you a favor when they wave you through when it’s their turn. When it says “lane ends in 1 mile” and people speed ahead and expect people to let them merge in.

That's called zipper merging, and it's the way people should do it. Very few people do though.

Zipper merge?

This is true. As a reformed 'get over as soon as possible' guy as well as 'don't allow those last minute mergers in' the proper way to use the zipper merge is use both lanes and then alternate letting the cars merge over.

Yep. You gotta use all the available space. If everyone uses both lanes, then you don't have this "Oh look, they're cutting in line."

Or maybe that’s just due to the actual traffic.
It isn't. If a road goes down to one lane say, a mile ahead, a single-file line starts forming way back from the merge point. The second lane is completely empty.

It is faster/more efficient for traffic to use both lanes; yes, traffic will still back up, but a single file-line that begins 2 miles back from the merge point is going to move slower than 2 shorter lines that then come together at the merge point.

the issue is that people aren't waiting their turn in the zipper. there is still an order in a zipper merge, it just changes the merge point.

if lane A is ending and they have to merge into lane B it typically goes something like this...

1A, 1B, 2A, 3A, 4A, 2B, 5A, 6A, 7A, 3B....
its supposed to be
1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B.... but people are way too much A-holes to wait their turn.

which just slows down lane B so that people in lane B merge into lane A, and you get a circle jerk or people who rush to the very front not paying attention to if the "gap" has already been filled.

Unfortunately, we cant Ahole-proof the interstate
