The Second (or Third depending on perspective) Battle of Ypres provides the most enduring images of WW1 to present generations. While Verdun accumulated many more casualties, it is unarguable that any battle in history exceeded the horrors of Passchendaele.

A fascinating study of the German people and society during the war through their letters and diaries.
If you recall, there was a passage about the wife of an SS officer in Poland and some Jewish children. As you know I have read a ton of military history and seen gruesome photos/videos and the like.I read that, great book.
