What do we know about Virginia?

I think it is also hard to determine the affect the loss of three team members in a tragic shooting had on their team. Their 3-7 record last season may not indicative of their level of talent otherwise. They had a rough year in 2022 - they may play inspired football in 2023 as a result. I don’t think CJH will let our guys take anyone for granted and we should win this game, but it’s hard to measure emotion and inspiration in a team. We play our game, and each man does his job, we should win. But we better be ready.

They didn't play a single game after the shooting. They earned that 3-7 record with no mental or emotional encumberences.

I literally know nothing about their program. What kind of challenge should we expect?

What do you know about them?
A lot of turbulence over the last few years. Recruiting suffered even from the relatively low starting point. They're better on D than O but only mid-pack in the ACC on D last year. Lost 7 of their top 11 tacklers. Only produced 5 INTs and 4 were by guys who are gone. Produced 30 sacks... 24.5 are gone. QB is gone. Top RB is gone. Top WR is gone. Top TE is gone.

They're bad. Really, really bad. The 247 composite showed them with the 62nd most talent in the country last year. That was below numerous G-5 programs and all of the SEC- Vandy was #60. Their number 64 class this past cycle is unlikely to help. Last year they had 7 4* players and no 5* players. They did not sign anyone above 3* in this last cycle.

So pretty much lost top 4 receivers their QB and entire OL

Yep, an ok RB room, for an ACC team. A defense not much improved from last year where they finished 7th total D. -9 in TOs.

Like the article said they could be worst this year.

Noah Vaughn - played for Maryville HS last year - is joining the RB room; I bet he see's some serious playing time.

Here's your breakdown

UVA was blindsided in 2021 by Bronco Mendenhall's sudden retirement.

He left, they hired Tony Elliot, but luckily for him he was left with the 21st ranked offense in the country with one of the best QB's in the country and all of his top WR's back.

Let's see what happened

QB Brennan Armstrong in 21'
65% completion percentage, 4449 yards, 31 TD 10 int

21st ranked offense

then tony elliot proceeds to take that offense and inexplicably destroy it

UVA's offense in 22'? Finished 126th...

Armstrong? 54% completion percentage 2210 yards 7 TD's 12 int's

Now they did replace every started on the offensive line, bur still, they had Armstrong and two receivers that are in the NFL right now.

So now he doesn't return his QB or his top 4 receivers, the line is still a mess and his QB now is Tony Muskett from Monmouth who was pretty solid there. First team all big south in 21, they moved up to a better conference and he had slightly above average numbers.

Muskett has NEVER played against an FBS opponent though...and he opens up his season against Tennessee infront of what will still be the biggest stadium he's been to and by far the loudest. Not Neyland, but Nissan will be loud. He has decent RB's, but no proven receivers and a very suspect offensive line. They could be the worst offense in the country. They need miracles. If he can't make an offense work with Armstrong and NFL receivers then how the hell will it work with a Monmouth QB???

Defense returns their entire front 7. Loses a lot in the back end though, so they can maybe compete a little bit.

I'm guessing it'll be one of the bigger beatdowns we've ever put on a P5 opponent in our history.

Maybe they got some stuff figured out on offense, but it just feels like a perfect storm for an absolute curb stomping.

While Virginia’s offense was putrid in 2022, they might be worse in 2023.

Quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who was supposed to be one of the ACC’s best signal callers as Virginia’s starter in 2022, had an underwhelming season in Elliott’s offense and has since transferred to NC State. The Cavaliers now turn to FCS Monmouth transfer Tony Muskett.

Additionally, Virginia lost their top four wide receivers from a year ago, including standout Dontayvion Wicks who was drafted in the 5th round of the NFL Draft.
Throw in the fact Virginia must retool its offensive line, things could get ugly in Charlottesville this year.

The running back room is the Cavaliers’ best strength on offense with four solid options, including Clemson transfer Kobe Pace. However, not one of the four backs (Pace, Perris Jones, Xavier Brown, and Mike Hollins) have rushed for over 700 yards in a season.

The bad news is that they will try to slow the game down... a lot. They ran about 56 plays/gm. UT ran 73. UVA had 5.13 yd/play. UT was 7.23
