What do you think about games like TN-Martin? Good or bad right now? Especially when having a season like we are having...

Don't care for these types of games. One to open the season is all we should have. Besides, we've got Vandy annually 😂

We are lucky we have this game after beating Ala..this would be a classic letdown spot so we're extremely lucky it's Martin and not KY or Mizzou.

I think this is the perfect game to get Tillman some reps as he comes back from his injury. It won’t be too much for him, and when KY comes to visit, we gonna go all WRU on they azz.

Apologize if a thread like this gets started every year. There are many different angles to this.

Do you all think games like TN-Martin are a breath of fresh air for the team (while running the SEC gauntlet) or a let down/chance to lose focus (especially when we are hitting our stride)??

Is there any upside? We could drop in polls if it isn't a blow out. Do you like games like this or no? Maybe a chance to settle down after the big Alabama win and work on things we would like to fix. Should SEC teams ever play FCS schools? Why not a lower G5?

I am sure to be in the minority but I would much rather play good teams every week. I have always preferred Bama, Georgia, Auburn etc to the Southwestern Louisiana Raging Cajuns.

Now I say this knowing approximately how much money I have spent through the years attending these games. Lol. But I loved opening up with UCLA Oklahoma etc

Upsides:

1. A breather between tough patches in the schedule. Not a bye week, but still a breather.
2. Help a little brother program (they're usually Tennessee schools) by funding much or all of their entire athletic department's needs for the coming year. Can't over-estimate how important these "go get a whupping" games are to the FCS schools, financially.
3. Easy W to add to the tally.
4. Chance to give backups significant playing time and game experience.

Downsides:

1. Not a very compelling game. Some fans hate because it's boring.
2. Harder to sell out, and close to impossible to get on national TV. So not a payday for us.

I personally think the positives far outweigh the negatives. I hope we NEVER get rid of the one FCS game we play each year.

Go Vols!

p.s. Some folks think of the Group of 5 games as identical to the FCS games. I don't. G5 teams can rise up and bite you in the butt if you're not careful. Anyone wanna schedule App State? Point is, G5 teams are often P5 teams who aren't quite there yet, but are trying to make their case. They can be hella dangerous.

The FCS is an entirely different animal.

This!

From a spectator perspective they are kinda boring but this is where you get those second and third teamers some reps.

I hope Milton plays early in the 3rd and gets to run the whole offense. That is our QB next year and he needs every opportunity to grow.

Good all around. We get to pad some stats and get a glorified practice in. Backups get game reps and the little school gets paid. Helps a lot with it being a TN school. Now if something like ga st happens then disregard this post and catch me in here tomorrow having a meltdown

Tillman isn't playing this week. Rest him one more week and let him tune up against the kitties.

Any game is good for us. Tomorrow’s game will teach us to stay focused, no matter who the opponent. If the game goes as planned, it will give our young players valuable playing time.

I think we should play UTC or UTM every year and keep the payout in the UT family.

My thoughts
Play 9 conference games
Play 1 Power 5 out of conference game
Play 2 in state out of conference cupcakes

I think we need this. A pseudo bye week. Just can’t afford any injuries but we need this to come off our Bama high. This would be bad for us if this week was Kentucky

This got me thinking: the in state rival week to end the season is great, but ours is Vandy…it would be nice to throw them in between Alabama and (choose another SEC power).

It is good to play in state teams and keep the money that we pay for these games in state.

No issue with them. It's a game where we will get to rest some guys, heal up, play some guys that usually don't get reps. The SEC is a dog fight. I see no issue with playing a game like this. Plus it's an instate school, so the money UTM makes will go a long way in funding their programs. I think we should play a game a year against a smaller instate program.

I’m not particularly excited about it. But, after a physical game like last week we could use a glorified bye week to get ready for Kentucky. Our SOS is always one of the toughest in the country. We can’t play top ten teams every week. It’s a good rest for my heart. GBO

I think it all depends on the year your team is having. Some of these type games can get a team Bowl eligible.

Because the way Heupel doesn't substitute on offense, this type game allows guys sitting in the sideline a chance to play and develop.

A strong week here and maybe a young guy on the fringe of playing meaningful minutes gets the nod the next week to play more.

So many positive reasons to play this type game.

Good this year at this point in the schedule.

Most years I would prefer to play a team that is worse than Pitt and better than Ball State.
