He's not a grand-slam hire, or a hire that will fire up the fan base. That being said, I think he's a solid hire and he knows how to coach. I think he's a better candidate than Charlie Strong was simply for his actual record as a head coach.
You're right, 50-27 as a HC and 4 of 6 conference championships. When the talent comes on par with the SEC, which it will THIS YEAR, you win. But you're absolutely right... Average at best. Give me a break.
He has been a winner everywhere he went. In 2011, he turned down offers from Illinois, North Carolina, UCLA. In 2012, he turned down offers from Kentucky, Purdue, Colorado.
Somebody out there thinks he can coach.

Guys and gals, I lived in Cincy before moving to Knoxville a couple years ago. Still have family in Cincy and own a home there, so I still have ties there. Been a vol fan all my life. With all that said, jones is no gruden, but I believe he is a huge upgrade to Dooley and believe he will do well coaching the vols. i also used to work at univ of Cincinnati. I look at what he's done there with what he has to work with. Nippert stadium, while getting upgraded a few years ago, is no neyland and believe me, not even close. Their facilities are nothing compared to the vols. they play second fiddle to the bengals and reds .not to mention,uc is a very hard place to recruit 4 and 5 star guys. They all want to either go to osu or some big time out of state program. Trust me, we could do a lot worse than jones.
Yes I did Ferris state and low level jobs unt Cincy. Let me remind all Big East is a BB conference. The SEC will chew him up. Even LOuisville moving to ACC. I had a great record coaching in the Bristol Park and Rec league. Just saying,,,,,
I like the hire. By no means a home run hire. Was not going to get a home run hire. So, it is a big upgrade from what we had. I like Butch Jones and believe he will be a winner at UT !

Basically my thoughts. Dooley and Fulmers later years have made me indifferent on the team in many regards. I'll go back to scheduling my Saturdays around Vol games until this new guy gives me reasons not to.
