What do you want from the government

No, I don't...I thought you were implying the opposite. More funding can go both both ways. Conservatives can appreciate capitalism (big company) and at the same time want more funding for education and the like...agreed?

Sure. Its all about balance. I do think that society in general has an obligation to educate its youth. Even if its not a moral obligation, its a smart thing to do.

That's why I like to see tax dollars being spent on education.

That's why I don't like seeing them spent on wasteful government projects, be they pork for Republicans or Demoracts.

But the initial question was what do I want from government. I want better schools.

The government has no solution for this problem, especially in a world of political correctness. Plus the NEA is so far up the donkey's butt that it is not going to ever get any better.

In a sense it is like running a successful athletic program. If the fans expectations are low, then you will see little or no improvement in the program. As long as our educational expectations are predicated on simply passing people through the system (as some sort of social alternative to working) then there is simply no way that it is going to get any better. The higher the standard and expectation, the better the educational system will be.

So you want the government, our government to educate your kids??? Why? So your once bright toddler can fall in line with the mediocracy and sub performing levels of public schools? (BTW...I'm not against all public schools) Do you think there will ever be a government funded public school that can hang with a private school, or even home school for that matter? It can't. Private schools and home schoolers get nearly one on one attention from teachers and can achive more in less time.

IMO many of the public schools are pretty much public-funded day care for now. Even the private schools are sinking a little IMO. 15 years ago I can remember talking to high school kids who impressed me. Nowadays, all but a few seem to be pretty vapid. They've dumbed everthing down too much IMO.

On the positive side, I'll always need people to fetch me drinks, serve my dinner, set up a beach umbrella, scan my groceries, etc. I have no fear that we're anywhere close to running out of those types.

To give the government back to the people and quit playing Washington power games...Daschle's loss in the Senate was one of the great days in politics...the people of S.D. said he had turned Washingtonian on them and forgotten them...and out he went...be nice if all the states would do that so we could get things back in order...

The way the truancy laws are set up, I would say that you are correct. In KY a parent can go to jail if their child doesn't have proper school attendance. That my friend is nothing more than a glorified social day care system, powered by the influence of the NEA who gets more money when they babysit more kids.

"What do you want from the government?"

Nothing. The fewer days the legislatures meet the better off we are.
