What does A&M bring

To the SEC they bring $$
To the fans they bring nothing.

This is just a corporate move, grabbing up part of a market to make your company richer.

A&M does not have an SEC size fanbase. Nothing like ALA, FLA ot TN etc. Maybe a little bigger than Vandy, but no other SEC team. imo

With this type of enrollment, you don't think they have a large fan base.

From their Spring 2011 Enrollment Profile...."The University total reached 46,422 students."

I think A&M would fit in well with the SEC, they have some great traditions and you would think there would be instant rivals with Ark and LSU. Too, being in the SEC hopefully would build their program and start taking players from the long horns, I'd love to see that, I use to like the longhorns, but wow, are they becoming so freakin arrogant, almost as bad as OSU or Notre Dame. Not too mention having the texas TV market. Does anyone know it A&M still does the bonfire? Wasn't sure since those students were killed.

I'm not sold on VT and the DC market. DC is a political town with lots of people coming and going, I don't think most people care about college football there, I know for fact most people in the Northeast(New York, Mass, etc) don't even follow college, its all pro sports. If you expand east I'd say you try and look to the state of North Carolina, maybe UNC but only if they get rid of those God awful powder blue uni's

DC is not in the northeast.

There are a lot of people coming and going, but unless you've lived up there you probably don't get how many VPI alumni there are in the DC metro area. I don't think there's any question that they offer the best combination of football prowess and TV market. I don't like it, but I'd be surprised if the SEC weren't thinking about trying to grab them.

I don't understand how us playing a game in front of Texas recruits every other year (or as often as we get them in our rotation) would make it more difficult to recruit in the state of Texas. The same reason would mean that we would get more recruits out of Florida if we didn't play them? Just asking?

Because playing in the sec is a factor now, every time i read an interview about Tennessee, one of the first things they bring up is that we are in the sec. With Texas A&M here, that pitch is gone and would make it harder. Just imagine how much easier it would be if Florida or Georgia wasnt in the sec.

I think A&M coming would be great for the SEC. Soon there will be 4 maybe 5 super conferences. Let`s get in front of the curve and have our choice of teams instead of taking leftovers.

No I believe they stopped doing the bonfire after those kids were killed

It's simple. TV markets. Thats all its about. It'll let the SEC into the Texas TV market..that is why they also want OU, Mizzou, and VA Tech. (Virgina/DC) GT, and Clemson wouldn't give them anymore TV market.

Going to cause the Big 12 to implode.
Not sure who Texas is going to play when there isn't a big 12 conference anymore and they are independent.
Notre Dame?

Thats the only spin on this I can accept.
If we did end up with 4 or 5 conferences,
instead of all these weaker conferences expecting parity
with the SEC when it comes time to hand out BCS bowl invitations.

Super conferences will be the future and with Texas holding most of the face cards in the conference the Big 12 will implode eventually and there are others who will be more than willing to bring them in the fold. The SEC is being proactive as they have been for some time. Once again the SEC is going to set the bar, the end result is inevitable.

+1

I agree with this wholeheartedly, both that A&M will be a good-great addition for the SEC, and that with the way the divisions are shaping up, we may as well stay in front and remain the most dominant conference out there, for perpetuity.

I also have a gut feeling that if A&M join, FSU will not be far behind. Saw some chatter this evening that FSU to the SEC is picking up steam. IMO, FSU would be an even better pickup than A&M on a competitive basis.

The only thing that slightly pisses me off about A&M joining is that it will take me an extra 2 seconds to type the stupid "&". In the aggregate it's bound to take several days off my life.

I also refuse to write aTm, because it sounds like a stupid hacker handle.

& GO VOLS!

I'm sure all of this has been touched on, but I'm saying this because I'm too busy to read through three pages of threads and I'm surprised that it's even a question, given all the talk on here in the Spring...

TV networks.
They've got a decent-to-good basketball program.
Mike Sherman has made them competitive in football, as they finished 9-4 and ranked last year. (Disclaimer, they lost by 7 to Ark last year, and lost by 17 to LSU in their bowl game)

From what I understand, we would probably gather another team to make it an even 14 in the SEC. Could be FSU (which I've heard things saying yes and no to that) or Oklahoma or Mizzou (which is only speculation).

If FSU is added, the current SEC teams will stay in the division, and FSU is added to the East while TAMU is added to the West.

If TAMU and OU/Miz (two Big 12 teams) are added, Auburn may shift, as geographically, it's east of Nashville. This could raise questions as far as how the schedule sets up with interdivision rivalry games; currently we have only one annual rival game with two rotating. Auburn moving to the East could either affect the UT/Alabama rivalry or involve two annual interdivision rivalry games. One way that occurred to me as I was typing this, is why not move Bama to the East (despite geography) that way both rivalries could remain intact.

But I could be WAY off base with this, no one really knows much of anything concrete yet.

abunch of weird ROTC guys and a cool stadium is all I know of.

that's not far off... we do have an SEC feel to us. We have a rabid obnoxious fan base that expects way too much way too soon. Overly extravagant tailgating for the sake of being bigger and better than your neighbor. the most conservative students in the country with a penchant for drinking too much beer, a student section 35,000 strong that will deafen any offensive on the field, the best recruiting base in the country that we continually allow another team to raid to their heart's content every year (I should say we're actually kicking ass this year...odd...) and a lot of fans and a lot of money. Oh and politicians that say stupid things every single day.

A&M beats Nebraska 9-6 at Kyle Field 2010 on 12th Man Day - YouTube

this was the nebraska game i went to last year. Quite possibly the greatest college football game I've ever attended, but I'm only 20... It's a fun place to be. To be clear, I'm 10 times the UT fan that I'll ever be an A&M fan, and Neyland will always be my favorite sports venue in the world, but I do love this place too. I only say all this because I think A&M gets an unfairly bad rap most of the time just because we're kool-aid chuggin' rednecks who get way to riled up over football (sounds like everyone on this board). Personally I really really hope that we join the SEC. Mainly so I can see the vols whoop some aggie ass in a couple of years and shut all my friends up, but even beyond that, we have a lot to offer the SEC and they have a lot more probably to offer us. And aggies don't want to be in the SEC so they can get out of Texas' shadow, they want to be there because it's the SEC. Hands down the best conference in college football and the sole reason "we" (aggies) just lost out on Dalton Santos. (luckily Tennessee got him so SUCK IT rest of FBS.) We want to be in the SEC so we can beat Texas. I'm a fan of two programs on the way back to the top while I'm still in college. It's very exciting. good decade to be born I suppose.

haha I love our president so much. I high five him every time I see him walking up and down the stands at basketball games.

Oh btw whoever asked about our basketball prowess... don't expect much. We were on the way up but turgeon just left and I think that will single-handedly sink us... pretty much the same state as UT basketball program except no NCAA hearing.

What they lack in numbers, they make up for with passion. Very devoted, loud fanbase that would rival most SEC fanbases. They would be a perfect fit for the SEC, if the SEC really had to expand (which I'm sure most know I don't want to happen). Like I said IF we have to expand I wouldn't mind Mizzou, or ATM, because neither school IMO poses a big threat.

We are #13 in the leaders... and that is after 10 years of sucking ass.

We are expanding the stadium over the next 3 or 4 years, and rebuilding a bunch of it.

I don't know. If you are pulling in top 10 or there abouts, you don't have a problem with "numbers."

Bottom line, the prestige, money, media attention, and glory of the SEC could attract any school. A&M and FS being in the SEC is a testament to the SEC's greatness. Our conference would not benefit in any substanial way from having those schools in it. But come if they will! They'll get a Tennessee mud hole stomped in'em.
