That's a fair assessment. I just genuinely don't like him as a play by play guy. He's not very good if you compare what he is saying to what is happening. Especially in football.
In your post, you essentially admit that you listen to Bob due to your disdain of the TV announcers. You aren't listening to Bumbling Bob out of want. You listen due to no other viable option.
I do yell Money at times. I'll admit it.
Good analysis, and to clarify - Mostly it's because the announcers they throw at these games seem like they don't understand the team dynamics or whatever. By listening to the Vol network, couple of things 1) it's consistent - you get pretty much the same product game after game, so there is a "homer comfort zone" there. 2) The Vol network production has some standards that John Ward established (go watch, if you can find it his memorial service at Thompson Boling). The professionalism that Ward demanded from his crews was amazing. There was a story told by one of the guys (can't remember name) of John Ward - No cheering in the pressbox - keep it professional. Peyton Manning, in Legion field, 1995, up against yet another long losing streak against Alabama. First play, 80 yard Manning to Kent touchdown. They guy telling the story said he lost self control on that play and yelled, and Ward at first gave him a dirty look, then, after a few, he looked over and gave him a forgiving smile, because Ward understood, and Ward was probably one of the few that could remain calm in that scenario.
The box scores and others that come on the air is pretty good to. And the post game interviews are worth listening to. Vandy's game Saturday, Kesling had a good conversation with Vescovi, and it was the first time I've ever heard him talk. It was nice - Vescovi is in awe of Dalton Knecht just as much as we are, man he was just gushing on what DK is doing. Is English Vescovi's second language? I dunno, but his southern accent is probably "below the equator" southern.
I'm old an grew up listening to Ward, and know that his standard of excellence is still present in this group. Talk about fingernails on a chalkboard, that's Eli Gold at Bama.. But I digress.
And I'll admit this too - since I turn off the sound on the TV, I honestly can't evaluate the TV announcers anymore, they may have gotten better. This even applies to Gary Danielson, Verne Lundquist, Beth Mowens, Herbstriet, Fowler. and others. I'd rather turn the sound down or off and watch. I've seen enough sports that I don't need them to tell me what I just saw. Seems when Dick Vitale is in the house, there could be 10 solid minutes during the game when he's going on about something that happened in the Big 10 20 years ago and with him (God bless his charities though), I feel the same way about his as Eli Gold in the previous paragraph. In the we say Basketball. Where Vitale hales from, it's a little different. Hard to put accent into text, but it's like "Basketbuoil". Anyway, Vitale "ain't from around here".
So maybe I'm lazy and just don't want to give some of these other folks a chance. I'm in a homer comfort zone, and like it here.
