Obama forges a compromise on taxes and unemployment. And it passes.

Obama brings START to the Senate. And it passes.

Obama endorses ending DADT. And it passes.

Obama seeks funding for first responders in NY. And it passes.

All after the supposed tsunami of anti-Obama voting just 6 weeks ago.

LOL right now @ Mitch McConnell. I'd say he's given every indication he won't be a very strong leader for the GOP next session.

Why can't we all just get along?.....;-)

i think it tells more ofhow low the marxist dems will go. they don't care about debating the issues or studying them, they were determined to pass unpopular legislation no matter the costs. even if the senate went to the republicans, Reid still would have passed these bills.

I wouldn't worry gator, America has gone beyond the point of no return concerning government control, deficit spending, government growth and social issues. there will be few if any changes made.

That's the irony. After winning, they stuck to their guns of intransigence, only to have to cave on everything once it became clear that the facts were against them, the logic was against them, the policy wisdom was against them, and they looked like a bunch of 5 year olds stomping their feet because they're mad they didn't get the candy they wanted.

what was an out-manned GOP in a lame duck Congress supposed to do exactly?

this is really some absurd logic

Oh, I don't know. Not begin the post-election era by taking ridiculous positions just to try to prove their mettle and celebrate their new power, only to eventually have to back down on everything once it became clear their policy positions were frickin stupid?

They didn't have to take these positions to begin with. In fact, had they simply started where they ended up (where they were inevitably going to end up anyway) they could have presented themselves as not gloating and as willing to compro0mise and work on policy issues.

As is, they adopted positions anyone could tell you they'd end up abandoning, they hand Obama a half dozen significant victories, and Obama looks like he was right on all of it all along. Now they enter the new session appearing to be limping, instead of reasoned and articulate.

evidence they backed down on everything is. . .

or is it your opinion obama really did want to extend teh bush tax cuts to people making over $250k a year?

you act like they had the power and got beat but that didn't happen. And I would count one as a significant victory (dadt)

Of course he didn't. But he was savvy enough to figure out that it was inevitable that they'd have to do it, so he got out front and made the compromise his.

When the far right squawked about unemployment benefits they looked heartless and out of touch. When the far left complained about continuing tax breaks, they looked ideological and unsophisticated about economics.

Obama came across as realistic, sensible, and the perception is that it was his deal.

The Republicans could have fought hard to take credit on it, but no one wanted to piss of the base, which is so much stronger right now than the left's.

Well, the thing is, he really dislikes the establishment GOP. He probably views them as having been rather easily manipulated by Obama, outflanked if you will.

Heard a commentator last night remark -- and this I think is true: the GOP took back the House and enough of the Senate to assert some meaningful control. They won 8 governorships and 680 state legislative seats. That was 6 weeks ago and NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT. Its all about how Obama is getting his way on everything.

heartless and out of touch means not wanted to extend unemployment benefits for people unemployed MORE THAN A YEAR? what kind of bs argument is this?

Guess the GOP finally got around to checking their playbook and lessons learned from their 95 victory.....the GOP failed miserably back then with their attempt to shut the government down. Voters want the government to work...work for the people. I think that was the message sent this last election. Make the government work again for the people or you will be fired.

Both parties have proved BIG government does not work, hopefully now Congress will show us that government can still work...then work to give us a smaller government.

it's true, but i do think you'll the new congress be more firm on cutting spending than previous gop congress.

it really doesn't matter, we've spent so much and we have so many relying on the government welfare, we're beyond fixing.

95 is much different than today. The American people don't get their news from cnn or the big three anymore.

A successful one.

It passed, didn't it?

only with the extended tax cuts for "the rich". I guess that's an Obama victory too?

and it's sad you consider passing a crappy bill a victory. Seriously, what world do you live in?

I see.

so obama getting his payout to our unemployed losers is a victory

and obama extending the tax cuts for the rich is a victory as well

this bill wasn't a comprimise it was the republicans backing down and obama winning.

good to see you remain unbiased.
