What happens next?

Football is a CYCLE. I don't understand why people can't grasp this concept.

It's not a "can't grasp", it's a "don't want to grasp".

It sucks being down. It sucks being down and feeling the steel toe of 10 other SEC schools' boots pounding into your rib cage today. But, such is life. Some will bail, some will wait it out. Many will complain. But, in the end, the Vol Faithful will still be just that: faithful. We'll support our future fellow alumni and the great players of our and our children's generations, and and when the program returns to prominence we won't be scrambling for empty seats because we never left. Our time will come again, and we'll be here waiting for it and cheering the team on in the meantime.

We wait...thats what happens next, wait and see. The realist surely didnt expect this new staff to "shock the world" today, yet i think they still did pretty good, not great, one playerhas made the difference in everyones opinion and Mr. Bell left us at the alter so we move on. The science of ranking these recruits is not perfect or exact, and it is extremely hard to judge what is high school talent and what will translate to the collegiate level, the number one factor for success is coaching, and we dont know what we have. CBJ has had success, but its a whole new game in the SEC, we wont know what we have until this time next year. After the season and a full season of recruiting, we should have a much better idea. So we wait and see. We have a tough schedule next year, but aside from the W/L record, we will know by how the team operates and fights, how the game is managed, does the team play fundementally sound football, these things will tell us if we are headed in the right direction or not. I think we are, but its not gonna happen overnight. Dooley didnt coach up, pissed off his assistants, couldnt manage a game, and apparently not very good at evaluating talent, so i think we can all agree at least as of right now, it seems we have upgraded at the HC position and thats the most important position. They will do their part, and we have to do ours, at the same time, they have to work hard and be competitive and somewhat successful and we have to support them and fill up the stands for them on Saturday...it doesnt work well the way some of you have suggested, that they become successful and then we will fill up the stands. We all have to do our part, together, we cant wait for a Championship to support our team, and they cant wait for the fans to get behind them to work hard to get better and be successful, we all have to start now, start by showing up at the O&W game and showing these guys that we love them and will support them.

This. I wish the nega vols would chill a bit and the sunshine pumpers can as well. Lets give everyone a chance to prove what they can or cannot do. GBO

CBJ and Co. go to work and coach these boys up and get ready for football. That's what happens next.

A cycle? Says who? Philip Fulmer?
Tell this cycle garbage to the evil one $aban.

Freeze was coaching private small division hs a few years ago, and OP is asserting that he is head and shoulders above CBJ, who is already being labeled as "in over his head" after recruiting for a whopping month.

I don't think the op was asserting anything about Freeze being head and shoulders above Jones. But truth is, Ole Miss showed up out of nowhere, unexpectedly and landed a huge win for their program.

Let's face it, UT is broke/broken....Jones is here for a few years....like it or lump it....getting out of this rut will be college football's greatest challenge.....and no I don't like it....it makes me sick, but until we can field a decent team and win, I certainally don't see anything changing any time soon.....unfortunately, it is what it is

All of the dust is settling on another unspectacular class.

The Not so optimistic Vol fans are screaming I told you so.

The Overly optimistic Vol fans are trying to defend the class.

Which side is right?

I am negative on this coach. I feel he is another in over his head.

But I want to believe that my school cares enough to want to win. That they can win.

But seeing Ole Miss and other schools dominate UT today makes me believe we just saw our shadow and are in for more dark days.

Someone bring some light into all this please.

In fairness this is the second class for the Ole Miss staff. I just looked it up and they finished #40 last year according to Rivals. Seems that having a full year to recruit makes a big difference.

i agree with your assessment of CBJ, but i'll try to help you out.

i'm a fan of the "moneyball" type evaluations, ie statistical analyses that have a high correlation with outcomes.

a while back someone here ran a lot of numbers and concluded that a key factor in predicting the success of a new coach was having a 9 or more win season at his previous gigs -- the level did not matter (BCS, division 2, whatever), having gotten to at least 9 wins was key.

CBJ has 3 seasons of at least 9 wins out of the 6 he has been HC.

In case anyone missed that part. I'll hold judgement for CBJ's next class. But no matter who we have/will get I am happy to have them as part of the Tennessee family.

Win at least 6 games, go to a bowl game, start a slow accent back to being relevant.. If that doesn't work i recommend Maker's Mark.. It's got just enough bite without being too sweet...

Calm down, wait till he puts a team on the field. People get so caught up in the opinions of so called recruiting services. Its all opinion, no one really knows how good any of these 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 star players will be.

Remember all of these sites, 247, Rivals, ESPN are trying to sell something, so they become more and more dramatic.

A kid with heart and work ethic will beat out a so called top ranked recruit every time.

All you whiny little b!t#@%s can go #@$% yourself. Go cheer for some program like Alabama that wins it all every year and has 5* kids loaded to the bench.

Part of being a loyal fan is going through the wins and losses. Your whining is an indirect jab at the 21 kids that just signed to give their all for UT. They want to be part of something great and bring the program back to its better days. If you don't, then GTFO - nobody wants you here anyway.

there is a difference between a LOYAL fan and a DELUSIONAL fan.

Agree...but Ole Miss.....top 10 recruiting class!? Hard to compute.
What did the coaches promise them......a blonde of their choice from the grove?

Some of you don't feel great, none of us will feel good this year when we get dominated by Oregon, Alabama, Florida, and possibly even Georgia. That's how it's more than likely going to be though. We have so many questions on both sides of the ball and we have the toughest schedule in CFB hands down. Things may not be great for a long time but I know that I believe in Butch Jones and I feel like this class and this year will lay the foundation for years to come. WE AS FANS HAVE TO BELIEVE.

Nothing wrong with that position but I can tell you now that a year from now folks will be on here posting that CBJ and staff had to recruit against staffs that have been courting kids since they were playing JV. This whole experience/relationship thing is completely overrated. Kiffin understood what it's all about and he won signing day even if we didn't get much out of it in the long run. We can rationalize why AU and OM did so well and we did what we did until the cows come home but at the end of the day the doers get the job done. The job didn't get done here today.

i have a sobering thought here.

maybe the 90's isn't the norm. maybe everything post integration, outside of the 90's, is the norm.

maybe people should thank fulmer again one more time

Hilarious. You say that the 90's were a fluke, yet "thank Fulmer again". You did see his track record post 90's, right?

I agree with you on the 90's though.

I believe we hired the wrong guy. Today was the first official sign of validation for my belief. I also believe that there are systemic issues at the university that need to be solved before we'er going to be able to hire the kind of coach we really need. Once the UTAD is moved completely out from under any control by the chancellor. and thereby the faculty senate, things will get moving in the right direction.

No it didn't. The problem goes a lot higher up than Butch Jones.

Regardless what happens, the two douchebags who orchestrated most of our predicament, Hart and Cheek, will draw paychecks, whine about financing to get donors back, march toward retirement and be just fine. Screw them.
