I will admit, when it was first announced that we hired Butch Jones to be our next head coach, I was really underwhelmed and not exactly enthusiastic about the hire. I will admit I was caught up in wanting a big name guy much like everyone else. However, over the last few weeks as I've learned more and more about him and what he has done in the short time he has been here, I can honestly say I really like this hire. Here are some things I've noticed about him similar to our recent coaches that I really like:

1. Much like Phillip Fulmer, CBJ genuinely seems like a "good ole boy." From the small sample size of press conferences, interviews and videos I have watched, he seems like he cares about people and is a high character guy.

2. Much like USC's current head coach (for the sake of those still sensitive), CBJ is a program promoter. This is something that I think has gone under-appreciated to this point. So far, he has really talked up UT, (best facilities, championships, dream job) and has sold his vision for what's in store for UT (SEC and National Championships). For a program that has been struggling for a good while now, a little "hot sauce" could bold well for sparking some energy and life into the fan base, the team and create some interest for would-be recruits.

3. Much like Derek Dooley (bear with me here), CBJ metioned a specific recruiting profile he looks for with recruits with character being at the top. We shall see how that pans out, but so far, he has been out on the trail recruiting some kids that are supposedly high character as well as highly talented according to the scouting services.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to paint him as some amazing coach just yet. He will have to prove that on the field for me to say "This is the guy for the job." However, it's been so far, so good from Butch and I'm looking forward to seeing how we finish out with this class and for spring practice to get here.

I support him now, but I'll like him if or when he wins a few big games! Been way too long since we beat a consistently good SEC team!

I'm right with ya. I think as fans we have to remain hopeful for the future. Sure, it's not bad every once in a while to curb our enthusiasm or have a dose of reality, but if a new coach doesn't get you hoping for better then you need to check your pulse. You may be a fan but you're dead. A dead fan is no good. If you unplug a fan all you do is add to the increasingly hot, stuffy, and uncomfortable room where no one wants to be. So plug yourself back in. Jump start your heart and starting bleeding orange again. A new coach, a new hope- a new era for UT. If you don't feel that way then your beyond recovery- UK fans have more hope then you.

I agree, that's where I'm at right now. Some don't like him because he's not Gruden/Stools etc., but I think he will be solid here.

Young, high energy guy with a system that when implemented well, could be very successful with some high caliber athletes

So far I'm in and hoping to get our program back on track. I'll admit I'm excited

If Dooley recruited only high character guys, then how did Bonner get in the program?
Also, did Cam Clear have issues prior to coming to the program, or was he clean until he arrived here?

I think it's more that he recruited a core of high character guys. I knew about bonner, not sure on Cam. Dooley for the most part recruited only high character guys. I would guess that Dooley took a couple of risks knowing that those guys would have some upstanding young men around them. I'm sure Butch will do the same.

After some hesitation, I like Butch and his staff too, but worry if what they did at Cinci will translate. I remember seeing Mike Leach at Texas Tech dominate until they played Oklahoma. Their offense couldn't survive a great pass rush and athletes that could smother the receivers like we will see with Bama, FL, LSU, SC etc. I do think he will get us to a point in a few years where we don't have to sweat the Candy game like we had to under Dooley and at the end of the Fulmer era. We will see, but I remain optimistic.

The only thing I like about him is that he isn't Derek Dooley.

Other than that, there isn't much excitement.

All coaches including CBJ want high character kids but none of them are going to pass on a great player unless he has done something of a truly serious nature.

Why not though?....What's there not to be excited about?

Not being a douche this is for conversation's sake only because I honestly don't see a reason not to be excited.

Grudens Stool?? That would really stink if that were named head coach!

CBJ seems to be very aggressive. I hope that he will turn out teams that other SEC foes dread to face!

Not Wylo but there is one thing...he lost to the coach we just fired.

Other than that he's got a solid record.

That's the most retarded argument I have heard in regards to butch jones. Who cares if he lost to Dooley? We had DR, TB, and JH clicking on all cylinders. The gap in talent was significant. It would be a better argument if he lost with similar caliber players than what we had.

I'm growing more and more into liking CBJ just as others on here. Wasn't too into him when we signed him, but hearing him, doing a bit of research, and seeing how he and his staff have bought into UT and now selling it to the recruits and all, I think we are in better shape than who we had leading us these last 3 years. Hoping that translates into big wins on the field, I'd like to see CBJ succeed here and be here for us for some time if all goes well....I can go another 20 years or so without us having to do another coaching search. ; )>

That's just so short sighted. If the refs don't screw us versus NC in the Music City Bowl and we win does that mean Dooly is a better coach than Butch Davis? Butch Jones beat Strong twice but just about everyone here was excited about him (I wasn't).

A vocal segment of our fan base has looked really ignorant with their reaction to this hiring. The sooner we can stop using this argument as a valid reason to dislike Butch Jones the better.

First off I was responding to "Why not though?....What's there not to be excited about?"

Dont know about you but him losing to coach Dooley doesnt excite me.

And I never said that I disliked coach Jones. His overall record as a head coach is pretty good. Minus the fact that he lost to the coach we fired.

At least CBJ can beat Vandy.

You do realize that they run two almost entirely different offenses, don't you?

Leach runs an Air Raid, pass-heavy spread offense.

CBJ runs a more balanced, run-dependent spread offense.
