What I saw in the Xavier game (if you care)

he coached the winningest years of the program going back a few decades and took the team to heights it appears we aren't going to see for awhile. If you want to focus on losses like that rather than wins against Durant, Kentucky, or at #1 Memphis, it is your choice of course.

Exactly!

I'm just trying to take a deep breath and take solace in the fact that there are many more games yet to be played.

Finally somebody that is talking like they have played the game. This was game one and in a very hostile environment. These guys have to get their sea legs under them. The exhibition games were against nobody. This was the first true test to see what we need to work on. Above all else, these guys want to win. We will have a great season. You could tell that they had first game jitters. And please will you people stop trying to determine CM's tenure. Either stand behind this team or shut up. The negativity is stupid.

For those of you who want Martin gone...Please see the football team for what happens when you change coaches too many times too fast.

Don't be idiots.

Agree with most, but think you're selling Barton short.
Without him coming into the game we lose by 20+.
Seemed to stabilize the chaos.

MC,

What did you think of Barton's defense? I thought he looked better than you seemed to think he would (albeit one game), and infinitely better than Golden ever dreamed.

Not bad. Better than Golden's. He couldn't really stick Christon that well, but not many could. I saw him moving his feet well, which is a good sign that he put in some work over the off-season.

What I saw was a loss.....am I suppose to read more into it than that?? Let me see.....we pay the coaches to win and not to lose. IT IS THEIR JOB TO WIN GAMES!!!!! Is anybody else tired of these lousy losses in both basketball and football??? Why do we keep making excuses for these coaches and players and try to act like the losses are OK? It's go time....do you think the Pros like the job the coaches are doing or the players performance? They need to MAN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't want to jump to conclusions about how the season will play out based on one road game. I am not encouraged, though. I believe the new rules will severely limit our physical players.

We had a chance to win the game if not for the horrible free throw shooting. All our opponents will have to do is foul Maymon or Stokes and they get a stop. Either our defense or Xavier's ineptness on offense kept us in the game. I don't know which. Our offense's rhythm was nonexistent. Maybe it can improve as Barton gets more playing time with the rest of the team. Frankly, I don't believe CM puts enough emphasis on playing offense or he just doesn't know how to coach it. Xavier's big men completely dominated ours. They finished layups where our guys would bat the ball around like a volleyball.

But----this was the first game and maybe we can get the poor play behind us. Hope so.

You are exactly correct. The worst case scenario would be another coaching change. Our best hope is that CM will get it together for a successful year. Success meaning a run in the SEC and NCAA tournaments.

Oh please. He's 3-0 against Florida. He's beaten UCONN, UK by 30, a ranked WSU that went to the Final Four. Come on now.

To be fair,

None of those would even break Pearl's top 5 at UT, and only maybe the UK by 30 win would be top 10, and that's with the worst team Cal has ever had.

Not that I'm giving up on Martin, but to compare him to Pearl is just ignorant, it's not even close. We might as well Compare Butch to Fulmer... wait.

Can you see the irony in your second paragraph in contrast to the first?

I'm not sure what I expected as I was watching last night's game. Maybe I expected this team to be smart, have a dominate inside game, look to pound the ball inside and draw fouls, not commit them stupidly. Maybe, I was looking for a team that doesn't just jack up a 3 without offensive rebounding help and shooting the 3 as the key to this offense. I just don't understand why we look so clueless. This is a veteran team that looks like it has never played together. I am very disappointed and now have to wonder where this program is headed.

I thought Maymon looked like a different guy, and it looked like more than just rust. He cannot move like he used too. It was evident on O and D. It looked like a couple of times on the offensive end he tried to make moves where his mind knew what it wanted to to, but his body just couldn't do it. I know it's one game, I know he hasn't played in 2 years, but I was really disappointed for him in what I saw. Also the new officiating approach does not bode well for him on defense, particularly w/ his lack of mobility.

It was interesting to see some of the lineup combinations that Cuonzo put in. Regardless, I'm gonna back this team 100%

See Kansas State after they brought back a prior coach....very different from a completely new coach.

I could be wrong, but I don't think their coach initially left under the cloud of an NCAA investigation and a show cause.

You are not wrong, but roadwarrior didn't include that issue in his statement.

My opinion is changing to a completely new coach would be more disruptive than bringing back a former coach and I used K State as the example.

Is it your position that bringing back a former highly successful coach who was doing fantastic until he mislead NCAA folks concerning a very, very minor recruiting infraction would be more disruptive to the program than hiring a completely new coach with no history with the program?

That's difficult to say without knowing who that new coach would be. What if it were (humor me here) Jay Wright or Shaka Smart. In hindsight, would you have rather rehired Jerry Green (successful, fired former coach) vs hiring an unknown coach with no history in the program in 2005 (Bruce Pearl)?
