I knew CooCoo was Sterling's Dads nickname Clifton Marlin. I've also heard Sterling referred to as Chicken Snake because when he was young he threw a black snake on one of his farmhand buddies. And the guy hated snakes. So Tony Glover, his team manager knowing about the story give him the nickname when he and Dale Sr. won the Twin 125s in 98. Another fact about Sterling Marlin he actually set a cow on fire with his Daddy Coo Coo Marlin. Look it up, I ain't lying.
Ernie " Swirvin" Irvin also is left out of the list.
I would be very happy.
Even if he doesn't win the 500, he has already impressed me. It's good to see him smile and be excited about racing again.
So far he has done about everything that could be done. Not to diminish his deeds, but Daytona really doesn't relate to the rest of the tracks. Ask Harvick.
That is true. Jr. has improved some on the road courses and on some of the mile and half tracks, but he still has trouble with them. Maybe he will improve on those as well. He already does pretty well on the short tracks.
Are you related to the Broyles that race around the local dirt tracks?
Related to Broggie Broyles that used to race dirt late models, and was quite successful. Are you talking about Knox. area? I don't know any down there, but you never know.
Yes, it was Bunkie Blackburn and he did win the Permatex 300 in 1969. He did race for the Pettys, Ray Fox, and Smokey Yunick to name a few. Sorry if I left anyone out...I was young. He died Feb.28, 2006. He sure did have a lifetime full of great stories from the old "stock car" days. I don't want to misquote the stats but you can find them on the internet. I believe it was 14 top 10 finishes and 4 top 5 finishes. Thanks for remembering him and including him.
His daughter(barnettx8)
Thank you very much for sharing. I miss my dad very much and this time of year is very hard for me. I would love to hear any stories that anyone would like to share with me. I miss his stories. I kept planning to record him telling his stories with my camcorder but ran out of time. That is my greatest regret in my life. Thanks again, barnettx8Thank you for sharing this information. I saw your dad race at Bristol & Darlington. I remember he was one of the contendors at the Old Nashville Fairgrounds. I found out about the Land Speed Record, it was 174 mph in a stock appearing Camaro prepared by Yunick.
I miss my dad (and mom) as well but they will always be a part of my life. Anyways back to Jr., what for a while had the makings of a great Daytona 500 finish for Jr. turned out to be rather uneventful except for Newman being in Busch's way.
