What irritates you the most at restaurants?

To me it says, pay when you are ready, more tea? All about perspective

I just think the server could put in more effort monitoring your table...Again it just cheapens the experience... Very similar to asking me if I am ready to order before they hand me the menu's

The vast majority of industry research says the guests top desire is to eliminate as much waiting as possible. This is just one choke point where there is an easy work around.

You're in the vast minority with that opinion. It would be hard for me to think of something that would affect my dining experience less.

Unless there is a check policy in place at a restaurant does the server read a table to decide when to drop off the check? If you walk over to a table and everyone is done eating but there are still two people at the table with half full alcoholic beverages do you assume they're going to stay and finish and just talk or do you just drop off the check anyway?

As someone who worked in the bar/restaurant business for years, if you have this scenario just ask the table if they’d like another round. At this point you should be able to gauge whether they’re finished or possibly wanting dessert or more drinks. As if it’s separate checks or all together then let them know you’ll take the payment when they’re ready.

It’s a pretty easy job that pays decent for what you have to do. There are plenty of stressful times and obviously done people will never be happy. I think everyone should wait tables at some point. It lets you appreciate the server when you go out to eat

My GM has a strict policy regarding the dropping the check situation. Not until our guests asks for it.
Here's a quote he uses to remind everyone, old or new, verbatim.
"You guys know who drops the check immediately? Dennys! Are we Dennys? F no we're not Dennys!"

I understand doing it at lunch as people are usually on a time crunch. But to me doing it at dinner without asking says we’re ready for you to move on now. I know they want to flip the table but asking first is preferable.

The only time I'm dropping a check before people are finished eating is if I've been told to do it or WE NEED THAT TABLE. I prefer to try to clear plates with food on them before I'm dropping the check. At the worst, I'm dropping the check as I'm grabbing the last empty plate or two. I feel that I have a better chance at getting a good tip when people don't have to look for space on the table to set down the bill or look at their dirty plates as they're trying to give you money.
