For UT in your mind.

Finishing above projections

NCAA trip

NCAA trip and a win

NCAA trip with no losses to lower seeds

Sweet sixteen

Elite Eight

No matter if you like Martin or not or want Pearl back what do you think is a good year for us? No qualifying factors just what is a good year.

Don't lose the first game in the SEC tournament.

Make the NCAA and at least don't get blown out in the opening round.

This year, right now. My expectations were much higher back in October.

With the talent and the seniors on this team there is no reason why this team shouldn't be in the sweet 16 this year. With that said you can only ask for the NCAA tourney not the NIT.

Unless your Kentucky or Kansas, expectations should change ever year. For this season, anything past the sweet 16 was over achieving. Not reaching at least the sweet 16 is failure IMO.

I think we should shoot for the sweet 16 or further of course also. But I think getting to the NCCA is a good season this year. We were not a top 25 team. Our fans overestimate our current talent and the talent Bruce left.

All of you that hate Martin or want Bruce back what is a successful season at UT? Why no responses to the question?

Before the season started, I would've said anything less than a Sweet 16 appearance would be disappointing for this team.

Now that expectations have been lowered, I'd say at least making the tourney and winning a first round game.

IMO, anything less than a Sweet 16 appearance with this team warrants a coaching change.

Is the question, what is a good year from this point forward, or what would have been a good year?

For UT basketball, I think it's still generally making the NCAAT is pretty close to a successful season. But I say that only historically, as expectations vary. I think the Sweet 16 was the goal this year even though Martin hadn't made the NCAAT yet.

But it's hard to say; look at Pearl's best regular season team in 2008. They were ranked #1 at one point, won the SEC outright, but only got to the Sweet 16 where we were whipped by Louisville. Was that a failure of a year? I'd say no because of the regular season accomplishments, but there's no denying that team's NCAAT performance was very disappointing.

It depends on the roster each year. UT wasn't expected to do much in Martin's first year and finished tied for 2nd in the SEC. Most pundits thought we overachieved. Last year, we barely missed out on the tourney even though we lost one of our best players. This year, we have talent and experience to get to the tourney and maybe even win a couple of games. However, we lost our best ball handler in Golden in the off season and replaced him with a role player. Not a good trade off IMO. Still, this team should be solidly in the tourney come March with or without Golden. A good coach would have them at that point. We'll see where we're at in about 6 weeks.

Sweet 16 or bust.... It's mind boggling on how we have the best team since 2009 and playing like we are. It doesn't make sense.

I'm pretty much with you on all of this.

Its funny how the most anti Martin or Pro Pearl posters haven't answered though. I'm curious as to their thoughts on what is a successful UT basket ball season. Does it change depending on the roster? Sweet Sixteen every year? What?

Anyone predicting a national title or deep tournament run every year is unrealistic.

When I first came on here 3 years ago, I was called a Pearl apologist by some. Now I'm called a Martin apologist by some. Every season is fluid and different. However, a good coach will find ways to adjust to the roster he has on hand. Unfortunately for us, Martin is still learning on the job. I think we should have a few more wins on our record this year and starting to talk about what seed we'll get. Instead, we're still wondering if we'll make it into the tourney.

Just what is a good year for us and our program. All years past and going forward.

In general, the minimum of a successful season for our program (and a majority of other programs) is an appearance in the NCAA tournament. It's hard to have a more specific standard, because the state of the program can change from one year to the next (IE graduate 4 starters). This year, pre season, making the tournament easily was the standard for success IMO. I didn't want to be in the same position of being on the bubble, hoping to scrape in.

All reasonable answers.

I still haven't gotten a response from the loudest Martin critics though. They have opinions about him and his record but don't want say what is a successful season. I guess they want to be able to say every season has been a failure no matter how far we go this year.

Compete in the SEC, don't lay an egg in the SEC tournament, make the ncaa and don't lay an egg there either. That's what I want each year, get us in the dance and give us a chance.

Before the season started most people were saying we should at least make it to the sweet 16, and that we should be ranked all season.

Expectations were high from everyone, but the Martin supporters have started to lower theirs in order to defend Martin.

Why don't you just view the threads about this very subject prior to the season starting?

It's funny how the Martin advocates have tempered how they view success.

Everybody like who? Fans? Not any experts. We weren't a top 25 team so how were we supposed to be a Sweet 16 team? No one is tempering expectations. We weren't ranked so making the NCAA is fulfilling expectations is it not?

But you didn't answer the question. What would be a successful season? What is a successful season for UT basketball? If just making the NCAA is not a good season what is?
