What is the best way out of jury duty?

This is the first time I've ever been called and I'm supposed to appear at the City-County building on August 19th. My manager will make me burn vacation time to go and I only have two weeks a year. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your employer can't make you use vacation time for jury duty.

I served once in my small town in GA. Poaching case, so only 6 jurors. I was in and out in half a day and done. Poor selectees around me got assigned to the murder case and were there for weeks. I'm a hunter, outdoorsman, and sportsman about it all. Poachers are scum. I knew he did it. But, the prosecution just didn't have the evidence they needed, so I went with the law and not my gut. It's a great experience. Everyone should serve when called.
I live in Georgia. I know a guy who got busted for poaching, had a ton of charges, and somehow they all got dropped. Something to do with the game warden doing something wrong.

Just serve then. I have and I took it very seriously. It's an eye opening experience when you are on a jury. It is extremely hard to get 12 people to agree on anything.

NE GA?? This guy was in Hartwell. Probably different guy. But, in this case, the guy had been in trouble before for it. They just didn't seem to have solid facts against him on this charge. Even though you knew he really was poaching. I would have loved to send him up. But, I couldn't without the DA doing his job and they had bigger fish to fry that term. I despise poaching. (Same guy shot 3 off my property last season. Baited corn in middle of field right in front of my house and shot the deer at 10:30PM after deer season closed.)

I'm shocked that you were allowed on the jury for him

I got stuck on a murder trial 20 years ago where the charges were just completely ridiculous. Got in the room to deliberate and actually had people wanting to convict a store owner who actually got shot and then returned fire and killed a guy. I was glad I ended up on that jury.

I was on jury duty for two cases, my employer tried to coerce me to claim I was too vital. I think as a citizen it is one's duty.

The first case was a guy claimed he was beaten up in jail by the police, no contest, there was no proof, especially with camera footage. we deliberated about 30 minutes.

The second case was a Federal one, fraud, lasted over three weeks.

My employer made up the difference between my regular pay and jury pay, I believe that's the law.

It is.... I should have gotten more info about it before starting this thread yesterday. My bad. My district manager is actually the one who handles this sort of short term paid leave, so I didn't even have to go through my branch manager. I will just do it... still not looking forward to it, but I will manage.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I got out of a murder case because I had known the County Attorney/Prosecutor since childhood. He was a deacon at my tiny little church. Just say you know the prosecutor. What are the odds they verify it? The other time, I got out of jury duty because I grew up playing basketball with the defendant. How odd is that pairing?

They usually don't want me on a jury because I have/had so many in my family in law enforcement from local police to prison guards.

In county courts not that big of a deal in most cases. You fill out a questionnaire, they give you a number to call every day to see if you need to report and if they don't need you you don't have to show up.

I got asked once what my thoughts were on the death penalty

I said "I think the death penalty should be used in attempted murder cases. If you shoot someone with the intent to kill but don't kill them, you shouldnt be rewarded with a lighter sentence for being a bad shot".

I got excluded immediately after that

In Shelby County, if you go in dressed professionally, you are likely to get excluded from a defense attorney cuz they think they can find someone dumber to put in the jury box...

In my jurisdiction, there isn't much you can do initially, unless you are over a certain age or have a disability. You can certainly say things that would raise eyebrows if you get called in voir dire, but you still have to take a day or two to go. I would have a serious talk with your manager.

I see you are in Knoxville. Not my area. I am coming from the attorney side.

Guess where I practice? That's pretty funny.

But in all seriousness, not always true. We are looking for a jury of our client's peers, and that can sometimes be difficult to find. Doesn't matter what you wear, we get to hear the occupations of every prospective juror.
