What is wrong with the basket vols?

Team is not overly talented. Coaching is suspect. Football in March.

Surely you're kidding. Not one but two Wooden award nominees on the same team , McRae and Stokes, and we are not overly talented? Talent isn't the issue, I guess that leaves it to coaching. Cuonzo has 20 games left to show he can get the job done here, if not, let's hope Cheek doesn't veto bringing back Pearl.

You are correct. We are actually very talented. And Kentucky's roster is what you would call "not overly talented", right?

Zo must Go. Bring back the Pearl.

Would like to see it happen but don't hold your breath. Bruce was probably the best basketball coach since DeVoe. I remember the days of Ray Mears and those were good days. Too bad we can't end up with someone like Bruce or Pat!

I think above everything is the fact that Martin just isn't a good motivator. Guys like him but they just wouldn't go to war for him.
Throw in that with the fact that he is X/O challenged as well as VERY hard-headed about changing ANYTHING and I think you have your answer.
Properly motivated, I believe that we have the parts to be a pretty decent team.

Before we get to the cheeky comments, my time zone is 12 hours away, so I am not able to follow basketball like football, so I can't just watch a game without a lot of sacrifice and effort.

1. Robert Hubbs; stats do not look very impressive for someone who was so highly rated. What's going on?

2. Stokes: is he just too slow? Does anyone think he has an NBA future, or is he just on a plateau? We had really high hopes, but he has never become the take over the game type of player we hoped.

3. What are some of the key issues with the team?

Thanks :hi:
I said after seeing Stokes play a few games...that he was a good basketball player, but he was never a NBA talent and he was missing his calling....with that size....he needs to be playing football....DT,DE,TE.....possible 1st rd pick if he'd been playing that originally....and i got ragged saying i was crazy...Lol.....wanna rethink it?

Same problem we have had for the last 4-5 years. We don't have bigs who can compete with the other bigs on the top 25 teams. We can not play inside defense or offense. Ia addition, we shot about 25-30 % from the three point line. We can not win with that percentage. Thirdly, we still are not playing well at the point. I think AJ will become a god inside player, and Phil Cofer will be able to play with the best. The guards coming in next season seem to b able to fill up the basket from outside. Therefore, I see better teams in the future. Stokes and Mayman have bee a disappointment so far this year. Hopefully Mayman can smooth out the rust from not playing last year, and Stokes will get his butt in gear and play up to his potential. If so, we can make the NCAA; if they don't, we visit the NIT again.

1.) He's a freshman. People were expecting an instant star like the fellas in blue get up north but it takes some kids some time. He has a ton of potential and will be solid.

2.) Stokes will not be in the NBA. He's solid but way to soft.

3.) This team is poorly coached and struggles with chemistry. Our defense is inconsistent and our offense in the halfcourt is pathetic. We have a couple of guys to look forward to in the future but this team right now aint doing anything imo.

The last couple of game looks as tho he is starting to. IMO When he is at his best Maymon's best strength is that first step of his. Whether it was to gain position for a board, or to face his man up and get that first step and go around him. We are starting to see flashes of the old Maymon the last couple of game.

Agree with you about Cofer. Can't wait to get that kid on campus.

Defense is better than average most games, but offense is dysfunctional.

Have not figured out how to take advantage of players' strong and weak points and which combos work best---or worst.

Can't make layups or free throws.

Half court offense stands around until a 3 pointer is jacked or the ball goes into Stokes who gets double and triple teamed and shots are blocked or he makes a turnover.

Lack of motivation in most games.

To make the dance we need to win 16 to 18 games or the SEC tourney. Not looking good at this point.

Have settled into mediocrity.

My take fwiw.

Mock draft has Stokes going in the 1st round to Houston. So, obviously someone thinks he has an NBA future.

My guess is that the key issue with the team is coaching.

Someone needs to check the coach's pulse during the game. Does he take naps during the game?

Other former U.T. coaches showed their passion during games, but Martin doesn't...

I am sure we all have seen a team in any sport, get their pulse from following their coaches passion on the sidelines. I even recall coaches getting technical fouls and being removed from the game on purpose, so as to spark a fire in their players and push them to a win.

So, the coaches passion is relevent!!!!

Have you ever actually watched CCM during a game? The guy stands on the sideline barking at the guys the whole game. He takes no naps. Are his facial expressions stoic? Hell yes, but the guy works his butt off coaching. I also remember several games where the coach getting a technical backfired and cost us a game... and if your coach gets tossed you are usually screwed unless the assistants are on top of things. Just because the guy is not animated like CBP was on the sidelines doesn't mean he isn't passionate about the game. If you don't think the guy can coach you have a right to your opinion, I just hate to see everybody keep piling on a guy just to be piling on.

One thing that has hurt UT is the misses in recruiting - Shannon Hale, Austin Nichols, Kevon Looney, Chris Chiozza and I am sure there are a few others I can't think of. Securing a talented recruiting class of 4 & 5 star guys is important. UT is a difficult place to recruit being it's known as a Football School. Still CCM has been in on some really good players, but has failed to close the deal.

Stokes, Hubbs???

Didn't say he hasn't gotten any, but there are some that will tell you Stokes is overrated and Hubbs was expected to be playing much better than what he has shown. Just pointing out out if we look at the issues with this team one facet has to be the miss-outs in recruiting. Can't always get them, but it seems when we invest recruiting time and effort and fall short of that player it takes it's toll. Hale was and in state guy who went to Bama. That in itself should be a sin.

I don't think lack of talent is the issue at all with this current team, however, a I do think coaching is the reason they are not currently playing to their ability. Maybe it's a chemistry thing since Barton is probably still learning to play with these guys. Hopefully they will continue to improve but it needs to start with UVA as their room for error is minimal now.

There are 50 nominees--and you could probably replace the last 40 with 40 other players who are equally good. On a 1-10 scale, with 10 being a first-team AA, where would rate Stokes. I'd say he's a 7--no higher. More generally, every team in America has one or two good players. This UT teams is nothing special at all in terms of talent--and, yea, the coach is pretty lackluster too.

50 Nominees and over 300 teams? And we have 2 of the 50? I would say its obvious talent is not the problem.
