My best guess would be Northern Water Snake

If it’s not a copperhead or a rattlesnake it’s going to be something harmless in East Tennessee.

A foolproof way to distinguish venomous and non venomous snakes is look at the bite area on your leg. 2 or 4 punctures = venomous. A row or 2 of tiny indentations = harmless.

I think a baby water snake. Not that people usually do this but you can look at a snake's eyes and tell if it's poisonous or not. Cat slit pupils are poisonous, round pupils are not. Poisonous ones also tend to have a diamond shaped head.

Just found out about the difference In The eyes. Also venom snakes have a blunt tail ending vs. narrow tail ending for non-venom snakes.
