What players in Tennessee could we offer to somewhat save this class?

If we dont get a HC soon IMO UT will recruit instate and try to reel in what they can. Recruits that have some major D1 offers. Does anyone know anybody in TN that could be possible recruits? Sab? LV? And no im not talking about Bo Wallace either.

Plenty of in-state guys yet available. What hurts is the combination of the 2008 class plus this class. What you can offer the 3 star guys is a good shoot at playing at a major if he works hard.

Ole Miss doesn't seem to have a problem with putting a good team on the field.

keep your head up, it's not the end of the world yet.

YET!

I think we do need to fill out as many slots as we can - local 3 star guys who WANT to play for UT won't be the worst thing. Just look at what the "2nd team" did in basketball against the #1 team in the nation. Look at what Johnny Major's team did against a top ranked Miami team in '85 (a video that I've had to break out and watch a few times this week just to get thru the day). A team of go-getters can outhustle and outplay a team of superstars - maybe not for the entire SEC season, but at least for a big game or 2.

If I were the coach, my first calls (after our own recruits) are to RB Orleans Darkwa and OL James Stone. Right off the bat. Quality in-state guys.

We won't get many elite players after this debacle, so try and sign some diamonds-in-the-rough, and some underrated guys you can coach up.

I am guessing there may be a few in state rb's who may be converted to dbs if they are fast enough

It's good to have a mix of guys. If stars determined whether a team is going to be great USC would win the NC every year.

Houston Nutt is a good example of what you can do with the right attitude. Does he have enough to win a NC, probably not but sure in hell has enough to knock other teams out of it.

My favorite Tiger other than Pistol Pete is Jacob Hester... rivals star rating 2. He only went on to beat out numerous 3, 4, and 5 stars... Justin Vincent 5, Alley Brossard 4 (did get hurt, but could not out do Hester when he came back), Richard Murphy 4, Charles Scott 4, Trindand Holliday 3, and Keiland Williams 5... plenty of other 3 and 4 star guys that just disappeared and not mentioned.

Matter of fact he kept beating out the FBs then they moved him to RB and he eventually beat out all those guys above during various parts of his career.

When a kid wants to play a lot more is possible than their star rating.

Here is what I got out of looking at 3 star or below recruits at LSU for years 2004, 2005, and 2006.

A+ means playing in the NFL and drafted or will be drafted at a high level round 3 or above
A means playing in the NFL at some level
B means a significant starter in college career
C means playing time
D mean very limited or no playing time

2004 3 stars or below:
Mit Cole TE 3star - D
Harry Coleman S/LB 3star - A or A++ (should be drafted LB could be 3rd round or higher)
Brett Helms OL 3star - A (houston but not on roster)
Max Holmes OL 3star - D
Jacob Hester RB 2star - A+ (San Diego)
Chevis Jackson CB 3star - A+ (Atlanta)
Tyson Jackson DE 3star - A+ (Kansas City)
Quinn Johnson FB 3star - A (Green Bay)
Curtis Taylor DB 3star - A (San Francisco)
Tim Washington DE 3star - D

2005 Year Satan left, still good quality guys.
Kyle Anderson TE 3star - D
Ciron Black OL 3star - A++ (Top 5 OT)
Lyle Hilt OL 3star - B or A
Trindon Holliday - B or A (might be drafted as a kick returner)
Brandon LaFell - A++ (#1 or #2 WR this year)

2006
Jacob Cutrea LB 3star - B
Troy Giddens ATH 3star - D
Lazarius Levingston DE 3star - B or A (draftable)
Phil Loadholt OL 3star - D
JD Lott TE 3star - D
Danny McCray DB 3star- B
Perry Riley LB 3star - A (should be drafted)
Kelvin Sheppard LB 3star - A+ (decided to stay for final year)
Steven Singleton OL 3star - D
Mark Sryder OL 3star - D
Jason Teaque DB 3star - D

The 2004 class shows that you can pick up good quality 2 and 3 star guys that can make a huge impact. You have to find the right guys, the number of stars do not make the player. Actually our success rate with the 3 star guys is probably higher than the 4 star guys by a good margin.

Our success rate on 5 stars is about the same as the 2 and 3 star guys or worse. If you give up on 2 and 3 stars you are doing yourself and the university a huge disservice. IMHO

Our 5 stars from 2003-2009 look like this:

2003 Justin Vincent RB:
- Great Freshman year after that he had nothing left
- Has bounced around a few NFL teams

2004 Xavier Carter WR:
- Bust quit football for track

2004 Early Doucet WR:
- Great LSU career
- Will be playing for the Cardinals in a few hours for the injuried Bouldin

2004 Claude Wroten DT:
- Good LSU career
- Would have been a 1st rounder, drugs

2005 Ryan Perrilloux QB:
- Complete Bust, set LSU back 2 years
- Great player, terrible person
- Biggest bust in LSU recruiting history

2006 Keiland Williams RB:
- Good career, never could quite manage to be the #1 guy
- Should be on an NFL roster somewhere next year

2006 Al Woods DE:
- Lackluster career
- Has contributed but underperformed

2007 Chad Jones DB:
- Great football and baseball career at LSU, contribute significantly for NC on both teams
- But he is leaving early this year

2007 Terrance Tolliver WR:
- Good career but still not quite the #1 guy on the team

2008 Deanglo Benton WR:
- Bust transferred to Auburn and still hasn't really seen any action
- Actually signed this guy a few years and got his grades all in line.

2008 Patrick Peterson DB:
- Great CB and is working on a huge career
- Should be #1 CB for the draft next year

2009 Chris Davenport
- Redshirted and some injuries

2009 Craig Lostson
- Redshirted surgery

2009 Rueben Randle WR:
- Limited playing time in Fr. year but looked awesome

2009 Russell Shepard QB/RB:
- Limited playing time in Fr. year but looked very good when in there

Orleans. Talked to him and he believes Dooley will offer. He grew up loving UT and would commit instantly.

A few I can think of are:
Shon Coleman (grew up a UT fan)
Chaz Green
James Stone
T Wilson
Zac Tait
Leache Seastrunk (Had TN on list but wouldn't come bc of Kiffy, canceled his USC visit after Kiffy became coach...think we can get him now?)
get back most of the decommited people especially Dline
We need a TE and Dline

Does anyone know anything about Churphy Steward 3* DT from LA? Rivals has medium interest for UT and La Tech. If we strike out on the 4* DT's, could he be an option?

Top in-state targets imo. I would like to get them all.

1. Tim McAdoo
2. James Stone
3. Avery Williamson
4. Ferlando Bohanna

It is late in the game, but I would love to see us make a run at

ILB Jonathan Brown CBHS (Memphis)
- currently committed to Illinois. Maybe Chris Walker could help us here.

If we are going to have some open slots, taking a chance on Darkwa (Ensworth) or McBride (MUS). For some reason, I think with McBride's speed, he could converted to a OLB if needed.

I think we could very possibly take Darkwa, but I would rather see us go after Rajaan Bennett the RB from GA if we are going to take an RB...

I keep forgetting about Brown. I think he is a take too. Even if we get a few commits back, it will be hard to fill this class without some more in-state players imo. It will be much more difficult to sell out of state players on UT in 2 weeks rather than the guys who grew up wanting to be Vols...

If we do get Kehoe wonder if there's anyway we go after O.C. Brown in hopes of turning him into something decent? Obviously something's holding this kid back considering he only has two SEC offers yet he's a top 10 guard, and in the heart of SEC country. If we lose out on some of the guys we had on the board (i.e. Wilson or even Fulton with Cregg gone) could be an option. I just hate missing out on the little in-state talent there is in TN, especially when its in the Memphis area and could open some doors in the future. The previous coach did a helluva job building a fence around Memphis (just another place he fell short).

Well, I mean, look at our 5 star names, and see how many truly made an impact on our program:

James Banks QB
Mondre Dickerson DE
Brandon Jefferies OL
Jonathan Mapu DE
Gerald Riggs Jr. RB
Robert Meachem WR
Jesse Mahelona DT
Albert Toeaina OL
Demetrius Morley DB
Walter Fisher DE
Eric Berry DB
Jonathan Crompton QB
Chris Donald LB
Ben Martin DE
Kenny O'Neal WR
Brent Vinson ATH
Bryce Brown RB
Janzen Jackson DB

Now, some of those were big names for us....others, I found myself asking "Who???"

But look at these names:

Arian Foster
Brad Cottam
Jonathan Hefney
Britton Colquitt
James Wilhoit
Inky Johnson
Josh Briscoe
Jeff Cottam
Marsalous Johnson
Vladimir Richard
Austin Rogers
Dan Williams (yes, that's right)
Luke Stocker
Nick Stephens
LaMarcus Thompson
Savion Frazier
Denarious Moore
Cody Pope
Dennis Rogan
Montori Hughes
Tauren Poole
Herman Lathers

The difference between these two lists, is the top one is 5 stars, and the bottom is 2 and 3 stars. Honestly, with the exception of very few on the top list, I would rather have the bottom. Stars mean nothing. Yes, I'm sure that "experts" spend hours looking at film, but what really counts is the work ethic and the attitude these players have. It's amazing the number of players that signed that are no longer with the team, but the ones who stuck around have worked their butt off and it shows on the field.

I appreciate teams like Boise State and TCU because they take 2-3 stars and win consistently. Boise St is the most winningest program in 2000-2009. Stars mean nothing. I want players who bleed orange and who will work their tails off. Go get em.

Since it looks like Chaney is staying, I think we will keep Fulton. Chaz will give us a fair look, but no body knows where he stands. It will be hard to get Wilson now. I think Robinson is still a real possibility as well as Cullen. Stone may even like us more now that the old staff is gone. If we miss on a couple of those guys, we will have to look at some in-state guys like Brown, Tait, Duke, and Clemmons...
