What Pruitt & staff accomplished in 13 days

The day couldn’t have gone much better. Still some issues that need to be addressed in February, but he’s off to a ridiculously good start. If he lands five or six of the top prospects that are still on the board, UT will finish with a top 10-12 class. That would be quite an accomplishment.

Question for the recruiting gurus: 247 has Tennessee up to the 26th ranked class, 8th in the sec. But ESPN class rankings dropped us from 40 to 44. Is there a reason ESPN feels like our new commits make us worse?

Simple answer: ESPN recruiting service is terrible.

-Four-star ATH/WR Alontae Taylor re-committed after looking around.

-Picked up a DT tackle, Kingston Harris, from the fertile recruiting ground at IMG Academy. This commitment and signing gives us a player at a position of need and opens the door to one of the most prominent talent hot beds in the country.

-Grabs a commitment and signing from four-star OL Jerome Carvin, who was thought to be a Mississippi State lean. Huge get at a position of need.

-Grabs a commitment and signing from four-star RB Jeremy Banks, which gives Tennessee a big, tough back on the roster.

-Brings in a quarterback from CA, which we desperately needed in this class. Shrout is a guy who's thought to have a lot of upside. Had been committed to Cal since June.

-Lands 4-star TE Dominick Wood-Anderson, the NO. 1 JUCO TE in the country. Pruitt's first recruiting victory over Alabama.

-I won't list all the guys who are now considering Tennessee, including one of the top linebackers in the country who says Tennessee is now his leader.

I miss anything?

I think it's a pretty solid effort from a guy who accepted the job 13 days ago and assembled a full coaching staff in the process.

UPDATE: Added quarterback depth from preferred walk-on Bart Harris from Missouri.

One word........struggling!

Started the day at 39 on 247 ended up at 26 in the rankings. I’d say today was a good day and in great position to close strong.

Top 15 would be a great goal this year. Anything outside that is unacceptable in regards to laying championship foundation, statistically speaking, based on facts of recruiting rank correlation to Championships. Ideally we have to be inside the Top 10 every year on average, in order to maintain the probability of winning championships.

I love it man. I've got a great feeling about Pruitt and company!

Great summation Freak. Thanks for composing. And it’s only gonna get better between now and Feb 7 imho.

ESPN hates us... Common knowledge.

I like what he's doing but cruitin was never a worry of mine with cjp. Actually, recruiting at UT has never been a worry of mine.

Yea, it's funny. I see people giving him a grade of '7 out of 10' or a 'C-'. Considering where he started two weeks ago, I'm not sure how much better they want him to do.

For real. Who did you want him to get to make it a '10 out of 10' or an 'A'?

I think he did an awesome job. He came in with a plan and targeted specific recruits and positions. He flipped several recruits with a single visit. And there's still more time to go in the cycle.

I'm very encouraged by his energy and recruiting.

Just think of what CJP and staff could have done with 30+ days to work with? We would probably have Mays and some top notch CBs/LBs added to the tally.

All gets back to Currie dragging his feet in firing CBJ.

Came here to post this. Signing Anderson doesn't diminish Warren. I think he's a better TE prospect than Pope or Eli Wolf.

The wild card is Bumphus. I almost wonder if the staff wants him on defense.

I read an article a couple of days ago that was suggesting that very thing.

Overall I'm ecstatic. I had a lot of potentially unrealistic expectations after the Pruitt hire. Especially when 5 star DE Brenton Cox decommited from OSU shortly after the announcement. Thought we'd get him. Thought Van Jefferson was gonna be a Vol. Thought we'd get the LSU OT to flip. And when we met with Mays, I thought we might hopefully get him back. Of course none of that happened.

Still, I'm incredibly impressed with the number of new people who had zero interest in UT, who actually signed LOI's after just one visit and a handful of calls/visits with our coaching staff.

I'm very happy Shocky nor the Nebraska JUCO WR came here. I'd rather focus on the litany of in state highly recruited receivers next year. Surely early playing time will be appealing. Hopefully Alontae shows out in '18 so we can sell them on his performance.

I'm loving how were reaching out to what looks/feels like a different 'breed' of recruits. We're not afraid to reach out to a 5 star California kid - etc. Guys I don't think Butch would ever have the balls to try. And I'm loving how the players who visited under Butch then took a visit under Pruitt commented on how serious this new staff was - yet still praising the family feel.

Ultimately, I don't know what we'll be able to accomplish to close out this year. If we could get 2 or 3 of the following to sign:

OLB Quay Walker
OLB JJ Peterson
CB Isaac Taylor-Stuart
CB Olaijah Griffin
DE Coynis Miller

... but I don't want to have unrealistic expectations again, especially considering some of those are already committed elsewhere, or at least very strong leans.

But I can say this with the utmost confidence.... 2018 marks the beginning of a new era in Volunteers football. The results will start to show on the field, and starting in the 2019 recruiting class, if a TN kid chooses Clemson or UGA over our Tennessee Volunteers, it'll be because our coaching staff has told them we don't have a spot for them.

What's the system?

Helton ran an up-tempo, hurry-up offense with Brohm while at WKU. It caused problems with Bama's D when they played. Now we have Pruitt hiring Helton as OC. This "system" doesn't give the opposing defense any time to adjust by substituting from run package to pass package. The writers and fans at USC raved about utilizing the TE's a lot when Helton arrived there. That's about all I can add for now.
:good!:

Getting the 2 recruits from Memphis was a true thing of beauty. To make TN great again we have to lock down our State and it starts with Memphis.

I don't believe they count JUCO players yet (if at all).

It looks like ESPN does the rankings weekly, and did the 12/20 ranking before the signings. It seems strange, though, since the ranking page shows 16 committed/signed. Looks like a lack of integration and reliability of their web infrastructure, or the information on which it's based.
