Who was that dynamite team in the orange uniforms? THE REAL LVS THAT IS WHO!!!

[Sorry for starting a new thread but if the LVs had lost this game, there would be 500 hundred different threads all saying the LVs suck and fire Holly (with 300 started by Coach Jumper)]

But this was very much the LV team that we all expected to see this season. An athletic and tall defensive unit that makes it hard for opponents to run their offense; Diamond being the clutch player who can take over the game when needed; Mercedes being a force inside; Carter, Reynolds, and Nared making athletic plays on both ends of the court; Graves owning the boards and getting the down and dirty paint points. And how about Nia Moore coming through with some clutch shots when MR was out with foul trouble?

And a good game plan from Holly and she read the game fairly well in terms of managing the substitutions and foul troubles.

The only not so great is that Te'a had a bad game (which did allow Carter to step up) but this is about as close to firiing on all cylinders have the LVs have come all season.

If this was a one off performance, well it was a joy to watch; If the LVs can sustain this level for two more games, a Final Four suddenly does not seem that far fetched.

What a stunning turnaround this could be:pepper:

Could be '97 all over again, except that the NCAA messed up and put the undefeated UConn team in another bracket and we can't shoot the lights out and beat them in the regional final. But that's probably a good thing. I think they'd kill us this year.

+++++++++++++++

I have never and will never blame the LV's... But you can run with the second part. They won for themselves, not Holly.

Oh, and by the way, KMA>

I haven't seen them passing like that all year! They must have had a player-only meeting and said "Ignore the coach's gameplan and let's play actual basketball! When we win she'll have to pretend it was her idea...".

Now that The Lady Vols have defeated the PAC-12 co-champs (seeded #2?) its off to South Dakota for a battle with The Ohio State Lady Buckeyes. Should be a good game...

My takeaway from the ASU game was that the LVs actually played like a team...good passing, tough defense, rebounding, and actually ran some plays that produced points. Also, DD took over the game when needed and hit some key jumpers.

Only negatives I saw were missing some easy layups; trying to drive on a taller player and getting shot blocked instead of passing off to open player; getting a turnover then dribbling the length of the court and having the ball stripped away from behind; and still standing under the basket and waiting for the rebound to come to the player instead of jumping up to get it. These should all be correctable and if the LVs play like they did Sunday night they should beat OSU. They will need a good defensive game to stop the Lady Buckeye scorer who dumped in 45.

No where close to being correct.

The girls played well (relative to how they've played most of the year) and showed heart which has been lacking as well. But, there is still little to know semblance of an offense. Lots of standing around which was once again repeatedly called out by the commentators. It came down to one on one moves my Diamond and she made the shots this time. Hope she keeps it up! Ohio State is very beatable.

I'll be honest, I have only watched part of a few different games of the LV this year. But the team I watched play last night will give any team fits. The outside shooting was there, the rebounding and defense was terrific. Congrats to the LV you played an excellent game.

Well, if we're going to blame HW and the coaches for all the crap play, then we must give credit to them and the players for a very nice win. We have cut down on our turnovers, and our shooting was good for most of the game, except for a stretch in the second quarter. We didn't have a long stretch of terrible basketball, with few points, that has been the cause of most of our losses. I don't really like the one-on-one offensive play that we saw a lot of last night, with DD, Nared and others, where a Vol dribbles around outside and then tries to beat her defender and score. It worked last night, the ball went it, but that has not been the case most of the year, and if you are playing a lot of 1v1 and the shots aren't falling, things can go south in a hurry--we saw it all year. I preferred our first-half offense where we we were getting it inside to Russell and she was both scoring and hitting cutters on back-door passes, etc. There is simply too much dribbling in our offense and not enough passing. Yea, all is good when you shoot 53 percent--but it's going to be very hard to keep shooting that well. We are playing with more cohesion and confidence, which helps a lot, obviously. The big difference last night was DD made close to half her shots, including some big ones in the 4th quarter, whereas most of the year her shooting was not very good--didn't she have another 4-15 night against Green Bay? We need DD to shoot 40 percent or better--it is an absolute key for this team. So long as she doesn't force things, which she has a tendency to do, there is no reason why she shouldn't shoot well.

UT's zone defense was effective, though I don't think we rebound as well when we're in it. I expect that we'll use it a lot against osu. We should have played more zone year.

Just keep winning and you will get your wish of playing UCONN.

One of the risks of playing zone defense when you don't play it very often is that it puts you out of position to rebound. The Lady Vols came to play in the tournament.

I have "no eye deer" why ASU played man to man. Diamond's eyes were like a deer staring in headlights, but with a cheesy :) on her face. She's one of the best one on one players in the country with her length and jumping ability. Also, Bash is one of the best offensive rebounders in the country and to box her out one on one is a recipe for disaster. I'm not sold on the PAC-12 (West Coast) style of basketball. They don't possess the overall phyical toughness of Midwest and East Coast basketball.

Perfect example of the clueless on this board. good for a laugh though.

It was a mixed bag. In the first half, the team generally had good movements, made cuts to the basket and other good things. In quarters 3 and 4, they did revert to a more stagnant offense but the difference was making shots or getting key rebounds.

If you compare to the 1997, that version of the LVs rode Holdsclaw jaw dropping tourney performance to the NC; I don't think Diamond would have to carry quite that much weight but they will need her to keep shooting a decent percentage.

They need to be a little smarter to. At the end of the 2nd quarter, the LVs had the ball with 26 seconds on the clock and a 10 point. Diamond took a tough 3rd pt shot with 5 seconds and ASU grabbed the rebound and scored their own three (admittedly it was a heck of buzzer beater shot). But that cut the lead to 7 and turned some momentum back to ASU. As the tourney goes on, little mental lapses like that could be very costly.

But having said that, this game sure is cause for a sense of optimism.

Any team that is <= to the LV's in physical talent, yet plays a straight man-to-man, will more than likely get beaten. I have no idea why ASU played it that way. I hope OSU does.

they never figgered out that Dunbar wasn't on the court so they played man defense?

I thought they played zone in the first quarter, but Tennessee did a good job of finding the holes and cutting to the basket. The only time Tennessee struggled to score was when they went to the aggressive man-to-man defense, so maybe that's why they switched.

OSU will play zone. Too much work to play man.

Hmm...I thought ASU played it straight up. But I'm not staking lives on it or anything. I was sleepy and must not have been paying attention. Sorry for the error.

That is how I saw it too. During that phase of the game, Russell did a great passing out of the post and the LVs were making great cuts to the basket.

Didn't ASU play straight-up man most of the game? OSU will probably start out playing zone, but if the LVs can pull them out of it, I like our chances.

Mitchell is like Vivians. She can't beat us if we keep the ball away from her. Most of Mitchell's 45 points against WVU came from FTs (18) and TOs. Her five 3s weren't what cost WVU the game.

Wuteva.

Hardest schedule 18 teams in the field, all the good players were young and hurt or coming back from time off, so any fan can see they just weren't clickin', now they are starting to click, now its a new team, its a the same team, just more mature. We've seen glimpse of this team all season, progression? Everythang has to be instant... wuteva. Like we couldn't get better, wuteva.

Holly suck. Players suck. Staff suck. Schedule suck. Offense suck. Defense suck. Administration suck. Butch suck. Wuteva.

Nared, nice game to bounce back, Cooper, where are you?

The same team that played Oregon State tough.

I back Holly and roll with the Lady Vos.
