What was the reason for Notre Dame comeback in the 2ND quarter?

Or might it be the program they want to play for? I know, kids always want to play for a coach. But...... big stage (TBA) big crowds (for now) some of the best facilities and still a lot of national coverage (for now)

You commit to the coach for 4 years when being recruited. The other things can play a factor but other schools have the same intangibles nowadays.

until Annie gets a outside shot going, defenses can sag. :(

Maybe Holly should consult Don Devoe.

Our men tiredly practice shooting the 3 pointers. They are SEC 2ND best 3-point shooting team? They work hard to have their open 3 pointers.

Holly has yet to embrace the 3 pointers. When the opponents build a wall around Russell, outside shooting is a must. Without the ball, Russell can concentrate on rebounding the misses and playing defense.

Ignorant post!!! Have you not been following the team the last two years?

Are you even following the team now? We had the #1 recruiting class last year, and have a top 5 recruiting class next year. Players still want to play for Holly, it’s the “fans” that secretly hope good players don’t want to play here.......”FANS”

Butch Jones got great recruits too. My point is I hope we don’t have players leaving or changing their minds about coming. And yes, I’ve been watching for decades so get over yourself.

It was just a question, no need to get over myself! Players haven’t left or changed their mind even while witnessing the past two seasons, we’re 16-2 with 3 freshmen getting tons of minutes, why would that start to happen?

Coach Holly said it was because the team was not pounding the ball into Russell. One expert commentator, L?, said that it was the turnovers. Clearly, Tennessee was overpassing and forcing the ball into Russell. Who was telling the truth?

It was a lot of things, however, it was a case of collapsing on both ends of the court. ND knew that we were going to attempt to pass into Russell and sagged in the middle. Part of the turnover problem was trying to force the ball into Russell. Sometimes we tried to feed Russell too low which ended in a sure turnover. Russell was taller than anyone on the floor, you feed her high. Sometimes they tried to pass the ball into Russell when we had an open shot. Since the Texas A&M game everyone is going to sag on Russell. One of Holly’s goals should be to free up Russell in the post. You do that off dribble drives, midrange and 3 point shots.

Russell is great when she is one on one, however, she is not consistent in fights for the ball. She also has a tendency to bring the ball down low when fighting for position and the ball gets stolen. On defense she has problems against strong centers, she needs help. A couple of times, on defense Russell was out front and Sheppard was being guarded down low by a much smaller player. In fact during the second half, ND had its way in the middle. We just did not have an answer.

Is that coaching, certainly some of the collapse has to rest with coaching on both sides. Muffy had the answer and Holly did not. However, we can’t give up on this team.

I will add that Muffet made a subtle adjustment in the zone she was playing and Holly made no adjustment like you said .

Then this team let their poor offensive play in the 4th quarter really affect them on the defensive end ......" no one " and that includes the whole team played defense in 4th quarter .Defense is about effort and there was very little being exhibited to get in front of the player they were guarding which resulted in layup after layup with no weakside help and resulted in the loss. This loss can not be pinned on the freshmen....this was a "TEAM " loss due to poor leadership ( that includes our highly touted Seniors ) on the court and Holly Warlick on the sideline.

Reasons for the change?

#1 Rennia's early foul trouble and being taken out in the first half.

#2 Russell getting smacked in the mouth(no foul?) and then playing timid the rest of the game.

#3 No help at all from the bench players.

#4 Holly (clueless)

#5 Bad shots and turnovers.

#6 No Dunbar to shoot the ball in the second half when the freshmen were brain dead

I don't know if it was because of the smack in the mouth, but Russell definitely didn't post hard and rarely gave a good target. Also they sat on the entry passes from the top, so we should have had more from the wing.

I'd add that Hayes got abused on the defensive end. They posted on her quite often, and our inside help defense was non-existent. They also blew by her a few times. We got beat on drives from the wing a dozen times or more (everybody, not just Hayes).

Defense would look great at times, then would give up two or three straight easy buckets. Fatigue, or just brain spasms? You got me.

Watch the first half and see how many points we got in transition. We dominated the first quarter. When we started going into a half court offense we stopped getting good looks. ND was slower than us and we should have pushed the tempo the entire game. Most of our turnovers were in half court sets. In the first half most of MR points came on rebounds and put backs. They could not keep her off the boards. She is not a back to the basket scorer and never will be. She needs dishes and rebounds to be effective. This is especially true when she is doubled and playing against larger post player.

Now we took some stupid shots and had some stupid turnovers but the game changed when we slowed down. I don't think they could have ran with if we pushed tempo. I guess we will never know.

The reason for the loss? Go read the ESPN website. Women's Basketball - ESPN

Coaching is the reason!!

Auriemma wins by 18 points and blasts his team for playing the worst game he has seen in 32 years. He wants to give the fans back their money for watching. Tells the media they have to find the positives when they asked him what positives took from the game because he didn't see any positives.

Azura Stevens came off the bench and played like a star. Auriemma said he never saw any player give away as many layups as Stevens did. Stevens said they didn't play Connecticut basketball so the win felt like a loss.

Attitude. Attitude that starts with coaching

Coaching is why this team lost tonight. Not lack of coaching tonight, a lack of coaching that started long ago. Lack of discipline, lack of pride when the chips are on the line. Lack of any offense. For those of you waiting for things to improve, thinking we will learn from this, things will get better - - don't hold your breath.

For those of you who think 15-0 is great when playing a cupcake schedule think again. It was a cupcake schedule. Teams with good players playing without an offensive scheme but rather letting players do what they want and create a flow works against cupcake teams. These girls have played enough AAU ball to get through a game when they are the superior players and athletes. There is no or little stress.

And of course, there is the fact that the second-best coach in WCBB was on the other side of the floor last night.

Who is it that the Lady Vols would have to play to be able to come back from 22 down? Not because of the lack of talent, either.

Holly has had enough time to prove she is not going to restore this program to greatness. Who besides me wants to see Final Four again?

I agree with your past assessment. I am astounded that a UT player and follower would allow the legacy of her mentor, a great coach and champion of WCBB, to go to the trash heap. Holly is blinded to the painfully obvious fact that if the ND coach were coaching the LVs, this debacle would not have happened. Holly needs to resign immediately. Also, let Dean coach the team for the short term while looking for a good coach to replace Holly.

People can gripe and complain, but Phillip Fulmer is not going to fire Holly--Not as long as she gets the best recruits and makes the NCAA tournament every year. She has been with us for way too long and Pat chose her to succeed her.

Why was Holly chosen and not others with better credentials or rings?

Please give us your credentials as a college level basketball coach so we can take your criticism of Warlick seriously.

Thank goodness for saying #2 because many people like to say she didn’t get touches but what I saw was a young lady not wanting the ball as much as she did after she got hit!

#3 I wish Hayes would’ve tried to score more (she only took 1 shot) and for the life of me I don’t get why green isn’t played more with Mercedes instead of being used to relieve her.

I’m also going to add lack of Senior leadership, the freshman were looking for help from Jaime and Mercedes and I saw a little hanging of the heads from them two as the game got close and ND eventually took the league!

At times I wish when Jaime is playing like she did last night she is placed on the bench to send a message but it doesn’t seem like that will ever happen. Holly got on them in her post game presser but that was a little to late imo!

And can we please create an offense that doesn’t just say force it into Mercedes, we have to move around and find other ways to get the ball into the basket, I think it is limiting the freshman because they are holding what they can do hostage to ensure Mercedes (and at time Jaime get theirs)

There were several times Evina, Annie, Davis and even MeMe drove past their defender and got deep in the paint only to try to lob it over the top to Mercedes or give her a wrap around pass when they could’ve tried to score and possibly get the and 1

The truth is Russell is too timid and not very aggressive and Holly is not the type of coach to demand that she be more than she is showing. I just find it strange that she has played well in international competition for other coaches like Genno.

Yes, the big Cornhusker girl tired Russell. After five years, her upper body strength is better. But, she can still be pushed around.

I believe Michelle Voepel took a jab at Holly in her game summary on ESPNs website...especially the part about making guards great.

"While all the credit in the world goes to the Irish for having the moxie to pull off the biggest comeback in their program's history, this is a stinging loss for the Lady Vols. Tennessee's biggest issue the past few years has been consistency -- the ability to play to a certain level over the course of many games, instead of an up-and-down ride that can be thrilling sometimes and incredibly frustrating others."

"Granted, it's easier to accomplish all that with spectacular guard play from the likes of Arike Ogunbowale (27 points), Marina Mabrey (20) and Jackie Young (18). But Notre Dame doesn't just recruit these types of guards -- it helps make them great. This was not just a team, but a program victory. It symbolized what Notre Dame has come to stand for in the women's game. Keep fighting? The Irish always do."

I'd said the LVs would lose 4 in a row, well they got the win against the A'ja-less Gamecock, but I don't see them beating MSSt. I've said all season, that this is a top 20 team, and sweet 16 is about it.

If teams are going to pack in a zone we got to get Mercedes out of the post so other players have room and lanes to drive to the basket. I hope if Miss st does that today we take a different approach on offense than we did at Notre Dame.

They ran a double high post (like we do) and throw to one side and go away from that post and use the other post as a screen and go to the goal and the other post with the ball throws it back for a lay up! SIMPLE.... but they did it MANY TIMES and we still have not stopped it?????? It is as basic as a pick and roll BUT if you do it right..... IT WORKS!

Yea VolFan2012!! Mercedes is not much of a leaper and your idea of her moving out to give driving room to the basket also will allow her to better move in to correct area for a possible rebound.
