A lot of good names on the list. My top 3 would be between Bob Suffridge, Peyton Manning, and Reggie White.

One name that I don't believe has been mentioned is Beattie Feathers. He was the first NFL RB to ever gain 1000 yards in a season, and he still holds the average yards per carry record.

By what criteria? Without even putting any thought into it I've got Gault above CP from a purely athletic standpoint.

Well, Gault could certainly outrun him on the track, but I've never seen any player make a potential tackler look so foolish as CP did, nor have I seen one player that couldn't be tackled in open field unless surrounded by several defenders - like CP. Willie wasn't in CP's league in this category.

Gault was a great player, but did fall down too often after catching a short pass. I always thought he did it to avoid getting his head taken off by a defender (understandable). Somewhat similar to how Hunter played this year.

I actually had a class with Willie my senior year. I think it was called "Enivironmental Law". Willie was a smart, articulate young man.

That's actually a pretty good argument for CP being a better reciever than Gault (more elusive running with the football, etc) but that doesn't necessarily make him "more athletic". It's why I asked about the criteria. Take literally the best athlete you can think of that's not a football player and put him on a football team. He may well and truly suck at football but that wouldn't keep him from being the best athlete on the team, would it?

Not trying to bust your chops but when you spin up a sentence with absolutes like "most" and "ever" and apply them to something as gray as "athletic" it can get a bit sketchy. See what I'm saying?

What's the best football player in history? My guess would be a human, air bud was a pretty dominant receiver though.

Athletic does not have anything to do with it. I was mainly talking about on the field play stats and play.

Sure CP was a heck of a Athlete but he does not have the best stats or the highest honor with awards and such....

I think most here that put Reggie on there list never saw him play as a Volunteer...they base it really off what he did as a pro...Theres half a dozen Vol defensive players Id put in front of him (he wouldnt even be my top line man)versus what he did compared to others..

i will tell you who the greatest vol player in history is not peyton manning, his on the field results were just ok. i think you must go with an old timer here as these men earned it, the pads and helmets were less protective and these guys took massive body abuse for our university, i would say the whole 1938-1939 team. two of the best ever in my book. Gene mcever has my vote.

Jonathan Crompton

During the Clawson as offensive coordinator season, my friends and I had a joke that dropping a big deuce was called taking a Crompton :)

Not trying to bust your chops either, but could you please point out a single time that I mentioned the word "most" or the word "ever"?

Didn't happen. So, I guess you busted your own chops.

Seems like Jay Graham broke a 60 yard run almost every game when I first started watching seriously . . . but for my generation I would go with Al Wilson, Leonard Little, and Eric Berry on D, and Peyton overall. Heard really good things about Atkins, but had to look up Suffrridge.
