What's the Greatest Country Song Ever Written?

I know they're corny and catchy, not deep at all, but I will always love "Dixieland Delight" and "Fishing in the Dark". I absolutely love "Hillbilly Hollywood" by John Anderson. Alan Jackson is probably my all time fave. My favorite song of his is a tough choice, but I think I'd choose "Thank God For the Radio". Jamey Johnson's "My Way to You" is up there too. Hal Ketchum's "I Miss My Mary" is a song I play over and over to this day. Doug Stone's "I'd be better off in a Pine Box" is phenomenal. Hank Jr's "I'll Think of Something" (covered brilliantly by Mark Chestnutt) is always a fave. "Souvenirs" by John Prine. Man what a song. The story in "Lonesome Dove" by Garth always gets me.

That's just a short list. I don't know how to eliminate it down to claim a true favorite of my mine.

Of all the artists, I think King George has the greatest collection of hits. You could make an argument for many of his songs to be among the greatest ever.

I wouldn't buy it. I love a lot of the songs he has sung (again, hardly written anything) and I even own most of his albums, but outside of Amarillo By Morning being the song that defines my definition of country both by sound and lyrics, I couldn't put any of his songs over my list, at minimum. His mainstream success is UNBELIEVABLE, but there are so many songs I put above just about any of his.

Agreed. I've never understood the love affair with George Strait. He's good, or even very good, but not great and there are many others who are much more proflicic as a writer and just as good as a singer.

Bwah that's not gonna help, here's my short list off the top of my head:

No order:

Blue Moon Kentucky -Bill Monroe
He stopped loving her today -George Jones
New San Antonio Rose -Bob Wills
Hello Walls -Faron Young

Well the honky-tonks in Texas were my natural second home
Where you tip your hats to the ladies and the rose of San Antone
I grew up on music that we called western swing
It don't matter who's in Austin,Bob Wills is still the king

"El Paso" Marty Robbins
"Walking After Midnight" Patsy Cline
"Ring of Fire" Johnny Cash
"Poncho and Lefty" Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard
"Seven Spanish Angels" Willie Nelson and Ray Charles
"Country Roads, Take Me Home" John Denver

That's a great list right there! However when I read the post title the first thing that popped in my mind was "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones

Just listen carefully to lyrics and you want choose nothing else! :cray:

Let your hair down, wear something pretty
Don't you know, how you make us both look good?

I use that one with the fiance quite a bit.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Achy breaky heart? Anyone?
Here, here!

I'd go with that one and "Could've Been Me" as well.

Sail My Vessel, Whiskey River, Coal Miner's Daughter, Every Light in the House is On, Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue, Chattahootchee, Don't Take the Girl, Don't Blink, Letter to Me, Cruise, Dirt

All time favorite is Whiskey Lullaby

10 feet away by Keith Whitley was another good one. Pandora reminded me a second ago.

Pretty much every weekend in Korea was beer, half assed guitar playing, and singing along to Pat

A really, really great song (not GOAT material by any stretch) is "Smoke Rings in the Dark" by Gary Allan.
