When Pat retires

It really doesn't matter who gets the job. Replacing a legend is never a good position to fill. Pat is a legend. Her replacement will have to be able to deal with that and is going to have to struggle with it. I hope CPS is around for 2000 wins!

no chance! Holly is in line for that job, that is why she has turned down Clemson twice and UCLA.

That is debatable. HW is a bit long of tooth, 50ish, with no background as a HC and with no personality to boot. It will be someone else if PS stays another five years or so.

If I had to predict a successor right now, I would go with Kellie Harper or Nikki Caldwell. But I think it's a moot point as I doubt retirement is anywhere near Pat's mind right now.

Especially with Geno on the scene and stealing all kinds of thunder. PS would like another NC or two, but they will be hard to get imo. Women's bb, with the exception of UConn, is getting pretty competitive and NCs will be tougher to get, unless PS gets another Parker or two with a good supporting cast.

UT will do what the UNC men did when Dean Smith hung it up. Holly Warlick, who has been to Pat what Bill Guthridge was to Dean, will take over and coach for a few seasons. Then, with the pressure off (the next coach won't be succeeding Pat Summitt), they will probably let Pat pick whoever she wants to coach the team next. Kellie Jolly Harper is as good a guess as any.

As long as her hand-picked successor accepts the offer, and the women's AD isn't a nincompoop who decides to go her own way, everything will be fine.

Funny how everyone says that women's NCs are so hard to get now, yet 15 of the last 24, and four in a row, have either been won by Tennessee or UConn. I can't think of many NCAA sports that are less competitive. Pat will win more titles, and so will Geno.

We shall see. Odds probably favor it and neither is going to coach forever, but PS' recruiting has definitely taken a back seat to Geno lately. As for competition, both UT and UConn have won the major share of titles, but below the top rung, there seems to be little question that many teams could beat other teams more consistently. Certainly UT's 08/09 season proved it wasn't the UT of old. That might happen at UC as well, but it also might be awhile.

By the time Summitt hangs up her bright orange pantsuits, Holly Warwick will be too old herself to coach the Vols. The team will need a good, young coach with head-coaching experience. We all appreciate Warlick's loyalty, and it's been her decision to stay at UT. I don't think the AD should be obliged to hire her at all--but I agree that if PS argues for her, she'll no doubt get the job.

I agree, but that's not really the point. Whoever succeeds Pat Summitt is going to be Gene Bartow or Ray Perkins, if you know what I mean. When Bill Guthridge succeeded Dean Smith, the main reason he did it was so the long-term replacement wouldn't be replacing Dean Smith. If Matt Doherty hadn't turned out to be such a horse's patoot, everything would have been fine.

Holly will take the job for a few seasons, and then one of Pat's former players or assistants who has had success elsewhere will succeed her. The more I think about it, the more I think Kellie Harper is probably going to end up as our Roy Williams. If Michelle Marciniak really does plan to stay in the business world (which I highly doubt, given how competitive Michelle was as a player), she may end up as the women's AD someday.

Not at 55/56, assuming PS stays another five years, she won't. One has to think that Cronan is more objective and long-term thinking about the program than to let it potentially slide under HW's tutelage. Loyalty is good, but keeping the program high-octane is most important.

Actually, J.J. Clark has a national championship with UT women's track and field from two years ago, I think.

It will be without any doubt Holly Warlick....No other name will even be mentioned....Nobody knows Pat's system like Holly.

You don't see Holly leaving to take a head coaching gig somewhere else if Pat does not retire in the next 15 years? Because that's along time to play second fiddle when other teams will obviously come calling her with their very own head coaching gigs they are looking to fill.

Holly is almost as old as Pat, so even if she did wait until Pat retires, she wouldn't be likely to stay very long. I think UT would go after Kellie Harper or Nikki Caldwell, but I don't think we'll even be talking about replacements for a long time.

Incorrect. Other names will be mentioned, simply because federal law requires an EEO type hiring process. Serious names? Depends on whether Cronan wants to reward Warlick, at probably age 56 or more, with a token year or so job opportunity. Or, whether she is more forward looking and leans toward a younger, but established, current head coach with a successful track record. Knowing PS's "system" is unimportant, because most coaches want to put their own stamp on a program. They might use elements of other programs, and in the case of PS, might want to borrow some, or many, of her ideas/methods. But they have to establish their own track record once they become h.c. Then there is the question of whether Warlick would even want to follow a legend, because those shoes cannot be filled by anyone, given the success and national reputation PS has. The longer PS stays, the dimmer the possibilities for H.W. becoming h.c. Whomever follows PS is going to have to have success "right out of the box."
