Go look at the previous threads. PG play and SG play have been a problem for us the whole year and just out stagnant half court offense in general. I'm sure that defense had a lot to due with our poor FT shooting.JP is always a moron no matter the competition so that's out.
Our guards didn't even look to score except Maze - so that's not really defense. Maze took a bunch of contested shots and some wide open ones - but he just couldn't hit crap today. Tatum had looks but he finished horribly and then couldn't hit FTs or turned it over by dribbling too much. Scotty didn't finish either when he got to the basket some of which were some great looks from dribble penetration... he banked em off the backboard but they didn't go down like usual.
Tyler took it upon himself to try to make up for these guys and forced a lot of bad shots since they were shooting so poorly and made retarded turnovers (JP/Cam/Scotty mostly). That's why he shot so badly and had his shots blocked several times. Our guards have been that bad all year - with a good game thrown in everyone once in awhile - so its nothing new Tiger den. Once again UT was beat by an O.K. team on their home court.
Memphis just slowed the game way down and the score showed it. Anderson and Robert Dozier do play good defense though. It's not like we were smothered in great defense and that's why we lost. We had plenty of opportunities to score more and didn't due to bad FT shooting and silly turnovers.
Memphis is good defensively, but c'mon - you were playing a just a plain bad offensive team when it comes to the half court game. I guess if double and triple teaming our best player, because our guards were no threat to score guarded or left wide open, when he got the ball in the lane is great defense then yes, it was due the TIGERS defense.
More than likely you'll see the same type of result Wednesday and won't think too much of holding us to 52. The LSU Tigers and long and athletic and have the size just like Memphis. Hopefully we'll be able to knock down our FTs to finish it out though.
