Where the roster stands after adding Powell

Still hoping for N’Faly Dante

With the 2 remaining spots...

1. Big man, 6’10”+ who has experience at a P5 level of proven rebounding, blocking shots...ideally could give 20+mpg...Brooks, Dante fit that.

2. A guard who can play PG or SG, can hit open shots, has experience as well that he could bring to some of the younger guys...Tyreke Key.

3. Handje Tamba

Agree 100% in that order

So after landing Aidoo and likely BHH today, we stand at 12 scholarship players. Fulkerson doesn’t count against the 13 limit, so we have 11 counting against the limit. Room for 2 more.

In my opinion, we need a backup PG who is a true PG and can handle the ball, and another outside shooter. If the PG is a shooter, even better.

Who are the players in the transfer market who a) fit those descriptions and b) are a possibility for Tennessee?

I wish they would go after Daejon Davis from Stanford.

Last years stats before injury. His Jr. and Soph. seasons are roughly the same.

FG% = 45%
3P% = 36%
3.2 RPG
3.0 APG
10.3 PPG

Good name.

Let me also add, if the PG is a shooter, perhaps the 2nd should be a true post.

I’m not sure they’re going to look to add a guard, it sounds as if they’ll be taking Tamba and looking to add a transfer big man with experience. If they can’t get the big man transfer they’ll hold the spot open for potential mid year guy.

They’re putting a lot of stock in Chandler being able to run the show and staying healthy, either that or they feel decent about what they saw from Powell when he was running point at Auburn.

I think Powell along with Vescovi if needed can run it. Chandler is going to get as much as he can handle at pg so we aren't talking about a lot of time. Also JJJ can play some point forward if they need as well. We have options. A big transfer thats rough and tough is priority I feel like.

I agree...main priority is a big with a rim protection ability and experience

Ok so here’s how we stand, let’s assume Tamba joins this group and so 1 remaining spot...

Chandler/Vescovi
Powell/Bailey
James/Mashack/Diboundje
BHH/ORN
Fulk/Aidoo/Plavsic/Tamba

A legit case can be made that Chandler, Powell, James, Vescovi, Bailey and Mashack are 6 of your Top 8 next year. If that’s true, and BHH is more likely to play the 3 than the 5, I think it’s pretty clear we still would like to take a body down low.

Just can’t see Bailey just playing 16 minutes really, unless he isn’t playing defense. Will be one of the go to guys this year IMO.

Will largely depend on his defense and how he’s consistently shooting...I could see his minutes going up to around 20 and he/Powell/Vescovi all being around the same.

Crazy how hot and cold that cat is shooting and for that matter, on defense. He had some nice defensive plays last year.
I actually think if he was more consistent shooting, Rick would take more of a risk with keeping him on defense.

With Fulkerson returning i think The BasketVols will win 20 games it will be tasty gravy if they can win more than that.

I'm concerned at the PG position. I believe Vescovi struggled at times.

When I see ORN on the floor, I cringe. Here's how I see it:

- We have 4 guards that can handle the ball - great problem. Chandler will eventually emerge as the man, but they'll keep a rotation of some sort. We're fortunate that we can move our guards around based on matchups and who is hot. This will be huge for us.
- Powell, Bailey, Vescovi at the 2 and we'll ride the hot hands. Bailey's improvements from 3 towards the end of the season have me really excited. Another great problem.
- I think the 3 is tough and will depend on our opponent. A few times last season we went small and if Powell, Bailey and Vescovi are hitting how do you keep them off? So we'll see James start, Mashack some depending on how he develops, but we see 3 guards on the court more this season than last.
- JJJ/BHH/Fulky (if he returns). ORN is the odd man out.
- Fulky/Aidoo

Thoughts?

There is a HUUUUUGE reliance on Chandler being really good and able to play 30+ minutes a night

What about foul trouble or possible injuries?

SV is a good player whose position isn’t at PG.

It wouldn’t hurt to have an extra ball handler.

I agree, and if I was the one calling the shots I would hold off on Tamba and try to take a guard and a big, with that said...

My guess is that you aren’t going to attract a high level guard, in other words if Chandler was to get injured I’m not sure we’d have landed someone who would start at PG over Vescovi who has already been a PG here under Barnes, so I get the idea of not just taking anyone.
