The space shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after lift-off, killing the crew of seven, including New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. NASA managers had known since 1977 that the design of the solid rocket boosters contained a potentially catastrophic flaw in the O-rings and also disregarded warnings from engineers about the dangers of launching in low temperatures. It was unusually cold that day with morning temperatures at 30 °F (−1 °C). The o-rings on the solid rocket boosters failed causing the catastrophic explosion of the shuttle.

I was in 5th grade watching it live on TV in the classroom. One of those days like 9-11 you'll never forget.

9th grade English class. Classmate’s mom was the school secretary and was watching the launch when her daughter visited to pick up lunch. Updated within a minute.

Making out with my girlfriend on her couch. It was a snow day and school closed. Still remember her mom running into the room telling us to tun the TV on.

I was 21 years old working at the Ohio Center(Columbus Convention Center). Several people were gathered around a security guard who had a hand held radio and was listening to the news of what had just happened.

I was in the 6th grade and I overheard an older student telling a teacher that the space shuttle had just blown up and "too bad you weren't on it!," in the hallway while laughing about it. I'm serious, the guy was in 8th grade (either 13 or 14) and thought it was funny.

My roommate and I were getting ready to go to an economics class when his girlfriend called and told us to turn on our TV. We never made it to class. The nest time the class met, we found out 3/4 of the class did the same thing we did.

At a friend's house because school was cancelled for snow. We were watching the launch live. When the shuttle exploded, we just sat there in shock, waiting to see the shuttle continue thundering towards space.

I was just finishing the second year of my first job. The plant director and his secretary were listening to a radio outside his office. That was unusual and I asked him what was going on. He told me the Challenger exploded. This was way before the internet so it wasn't until I got home that I saw the tape. It was especially sad because I think Christa McAuliffe was the first teacher that shuttle carried.
