“Good”?

Mears stayed even with KY after they had a decades long head start.

Got TN its first ever NCAAT invitation (when the SEC was only given one and Adolph Rupp got almost all of them). Mears also had a national championship.
I meant no disrespect to Ray ... in fact, he is statistically the best coach ever at UT ... .713 ... that's a minor exaggeration, but I am counting a minimum number of games as a requirement to qualify.
But I did not think he was in the great/elite coaches at that time. Respectfully, I still think that.
I do not that Mears ever had a National Championship at Tennessee, but I could be mistaken.
The Great list of coaches would look like this: Wooden, Knight, Dean Smith, etc. ... I would not have included Mears in that list.

Natty at Wittenberg. Pearl had one at a lower level as well. Southern Indiana.

Let's not include the snake oil salesman in the same breath as Ray Mears.
By the way I think the Auburn coach is a good coach (but I do not want him anywhere near our program any more), but he is not even in the same class with Ray!!!
I was in Stokely for the Ernie and Bernie era. Those were good times!
PS. I was glad when he was sent packing. The lack of honest was too galling for me.

Unfortunately until his last 2 years only the SEC regular season(no tourney) champ went to the Big Dance. He had some really good Top 10 teams that never got to play. For instance his 66 team beat Rupps Runts in the only loss they had until losing to Texas Western in the Finals. Who knows how far they would have gone,

As mentioned I believe he was 16-16 against UK during his career.Pretty impressive. Also unfortunately he was suffering from depression at the end of his career too.

Are you aware that the NCAAT field was only 32 teams, only 2 SEC schools were invited, and the teams weren’t seeded during the 3 E&B years (25 teams and 1 SEC schools when Ernie was a freshman)? That Bernard missed the 1976 NCAAT with an injury? And that Reggie was a very skinny freshman in 1977?

You mean the skinny freshman that scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds against a Syracuse team that lost to UNC Charlotte(who did make the final 4) by 22 in their next game.

And Bernard did miss the 76 game against VMI . But we still had Ernie, Mike Jackson, Johnny Darden and Terry Crosby. We should have been able to beat VMI with Ernie and 4 inter-mural guys. Next question?

Tennis/golf/baseball in that order. Baseball has been really close as of late. Football will take a while. Dont get me started on basketball.

Did you know that that was one of VMI’s greatest ever teams? Or that Ron Carter was their best player ever? Intramural?

BTW, Terry Crosby averaged 3 ppg that year.

Wow, best player ever, 2 bench seasons in the NBA averaging 2-3 points a game.

The direction we are headed I could see a trifecta in the same year with football, baseball, and softball.

Didn’t we have a men’s swimmer win a national championship last year? I know he swam a sub 20 second 50m which is bonkers fast.
