Whitlock: Why Duke is really the #1 overall seed

Seth Davis (Duke grad) said this morning that Duke shouldn't be a 1 seed. But rather than a conspiracy it was just a mistake and the committee makes them every year. Yeah. Right.

Only this time, it was actually relevent to the column and to his overall message. Lets be honest, the only reason why the NBA isn't popular among the mainstream is because you don't have a Larry Bird type player winning rings anymore. Now that may make some of you feel uncomfortable, but that is the absolute truth... and I usually don't side with Whitlock when he goes on his racial rants. But he is spot on with that comment.

Opinion can't be "absolute truth".

I'd say that's probably true to the same extent. Don't misunderstand me, I think it's wrong to support a team based solely on racial bias, but I think it does happen. Would you not agree that most television ads are aimed toward the caucasian demographic and most of those companies represented by those ads are lead primarily by caucasian CEO's/boards? Again, I'm not saying it's right, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility.

Well when the majority of your customers are of that demographic, you tend to cater to them. It could be racism/bias, or it could be a smart business move since they know where their bread is buttered.

Which lends more credence to the article.

I would like to think most of the country is past this at this point.

Agree.
Odd then, that Jordan was the most commercialized and most popular player ever.

Ding ding ding.

Also, in the "whitest game" (for lack of a better term) golf, the star of the game and one of the most popular athletes of all time is black.

Pre-scandal of course.

The NBA has other major issues besides the race of it's players. Including but not limited to there being way to many teams, too long of a season, and the post season is way too long.

I'm gonna start being super racist so I can be what all these writers say I am. I don't watch the NBA because I like the college game better. If you're a black man and you think the NBA isn't getting as good of ratings because a white man isn't the star anymore then you're just lying to yourself. This woe is me mentality is really getting on my last nerve.

Hmm, maybe a bigger proportion are aimed towards whites because there are a bigger proportion of whites? How stupid do you have to be to not understand that? If there was 95% hispanics here you would see majority hispanic commercials. Advertisers don't give a flying F about what color skin they are selling to, they just want your dollars.

Using this logic, shouldn't the NHL be the most popular professional sports league in the country?

And having Duke in a prominent position in the tourney brings more of the target audience to the television.

Of course...the NCAA tournament is having such a huge problem with viewership, so they conspired to make the path easier for a team of white guys because unathletic white guys are what America REALLY wants to watch. Spot on...

Because ratings have been such a problem.

Plus to add to the Tiger Woods comment, the PGA's ratings actually go down significantly when he isn't involved. So I guess all the white viewers who stop watching must hate white golfers.

Tiger, besides being arguably the greatest golfer ever, attracts a more diverse crowd. Who said it's the white viewers that stop watching?

So you honeslty think the majority of those that stop watching are non-whites, considering whites make up the majority of golf viewership, even after the rise of Woods?

I couldn't tell you, I don't watch golf regardless. I think it would be interesting to compare golf's tv ratings pre-Tiger, when Tiger plays, and times when Tiger is not in the tourney for whatever reason. I think the pre-Tiger ratings wouldn't be dramatically different from ratings of the past couple of years when Tiger was on the tour, but not playing.

I think it would be interesting for you to quit blowing smoke out your ass and admit that you are 100%, undeniably, wrong.
