Who Among Today's Drivers Will Make Hall of Fame?

to me, leaving it open to ALL of NASCAR, is way to objective to judge.
Yeah, this part blows. Basically you're gonna have Ron Hornaday and his four Truck Series championships in this Hall of Fame eventually. It's like inducting the all-time leader in home runs in AA ball into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Since they're gonna do that, I don't see how they can't induct drivers who win a relatively small number of races (say 10 to 20) in the Cup Series with that actually being the highest level of NASCAR... which opens the door to pretty much everyone but the start-and-park drivers.

Anyone know about when they'll be voting on/announcing the next class? Not anytime soon I'm sure, but I have to believe Pearson, Yarborough, and Waltrip will be three of the five in the second group.

That's a solid group for sure. The only thing that might keep one out would be how many of the early pioneers that would be picked. Red Byron, Herb Thomas, Tim Flock, Fireball Roberts, Ned Jarrett, Buck Baker and Lee Petty are all locks getting in sometime. I would also expect Humpy Wheeler, to at least be nominated.

Nascar had to find a way to get Jr. in the HOF somehow.

No way he should be in based on what he's done up to this point... but at the same time if they're gonna open it up to guys like Hornaday who did exactly nothing in the Cup Series, then I don't see how you can't put guys like Dale Jr., Jeff Burton, and anyone else that has won several races at the top level (plus a couple of Busch Series championships that Jr. has which sadly will count for something as far as Hall of Fame induction goes).

I believe it will take more than two champs in Busch or Trucks, unless someone dominated either division for several years, like Jerry Cook or Ritchie Evans in Modifieds.

The number of inductees outside of Cup should be very limited, or there should be subdivision of HOF.

i'm with doozer. i think it has to be the elite drivers for the hof. among today's drivers, jimmie, smoke, and jeff gordon are the only 3 i would consider at this point. mark matrin would be a definate maybe.

I agree RP. It should. But soner or later there will not be any elite drivers out there to put in and it will start to get watered down. It should be like baseball, you get in by getting a % of votes. Not the top 5 every year. Harder to choose than most sports because you have drivers, owners, and crew chiefs that should all be in there.

if they're going to let drivers from all series in, they have to have a section for broadcasters too.

I don't connect the two, but I wouldn't be surprised if Barney Hall gets in down the road. Ken Squire would never get my vote. Ned Jarret will get in for each thing as probably will Benny Parsons. Parsons perhaps more for broadcasting. Jarret would make it strictly as a driver.

I don't think there are going to be sections as such, but they have made it clear the HOF is not limited to the top series, and the original nominees included at least one driver from outside of it.

My main concern is not to look over the pioneers that were great drivers, not just because they were driving in the beginning, in favor of more current drivers due to their being more well known to today's fans.
