LSU was preseason picked to be 5th in the West

We were picked 3rd in the East

We’re 9-1

They’re 8-2

Very similar, but I think Kelly has done a slightly better job at this point.

Heup showed who was better this year on the field where it counts. He outcoached him and it wasn't close that Saturday.

LSU wins the SEC title....Kelly.

They lose the SEC title game.....Heupel

I will say that people are sleeping a little on Kirby Smart. You win the natty, lose everyone they lost, and are undefeated and #1, it deserves some sort of acknowledgement.

I just couldn't give it to him with that roster. I'd love to see what Smart could do at a Auburn or Ole Miss type team where they have respectable rosters , but not loaded top to bottom with NFL players.
Smart had 15 guys drafted off last year's team. He lost 5 first rounders off the defense alone and yet again has the best defense in CFB. I think Heupel should be COTY because of the strong Year 2 jump but Kirby Smart is a damn good football coach, stupid haircut notwithstanding. I can't believe there are people still in denial about this.

Georgia was overwhelming choice to win East (almost unanimous). They were top 3 nationally. What have they done that wasn’t expected?
Yeah I don’t see giving it to him because he’s meeting expectations with the most talented roster in the SEC. They’ve had a soft schedule and their toughest opponent was at 🏠

Oh I'm not denying he's a great coach. He's a fantastic coach. I just don't think he could have carried Tennessee from where they were when Heupel took this mess and turned them into arguably the 2nd or 3rd best team in the country in just over 1 season.

I started to write up a long mess about how much better LSU was the year before Kelly took over vs our team before Josh took over, but it's loaded with ifs and buts . How much better is LSU than their 2021 team? I'd almost call it a wash since they played a much better Alabama team close in 21 than the one they beat in OT this year. They also had wins against MissSt, Auburn, Florida , and #15A&M . We were an absolute disaster in 20 and went from 3-7 -> 7-6-> 9-1(likely 11-1 plus possible 12-1) . Since CotY is awarded based on performance for this year, it has to be Heupel over Kelly and Smart.

Let's face it. Georgia hasn't had stiff competition this year, including us. Their roster talent overpowered us in every way. It wasn't magic scheming by Smart/Crazyface/Lanning . They bullied us man on man at nearly every position . Yes their team was green in some spots, but they just outgunned us in speed and power. I'd imagine Drinkwitz would have schooled us with the team Georgia has this year.

Drinkwitz is a medicre head coach who would have been better off staying at Appalachian State.

I don’t even put Smart on the list.

It’s
1a - Kelly
1b - Heupel

Kelly just clinched the SEC West and is 8-2 after being picked 5th in the West

Heupel is 9-1 with the only loss to Georgia.

One won their conference, one didn’t. I think that’s gonna be the deciding factor. Although I think Heupel should win, I don’t think he will

Bama has more talent than UGA on paper. Both Bama and LSU both have alot more talent than us on paper, neither schooled us.

In truth, two names stand out on here: Josh Heupel and Brian Kelly. Kirby Smart could have argument as well. The rest don't belong on here.

It's a much closer race for this award than it was earlier in the season, but I still think Heupel. Both Kelly and Heupel have overachieved this year but LSU has a more talented, deeper roster and is not as far removed from a period of success as Tennessee is.

Both events were very unlikely, but before the season started which was more unlikely: Tennessee going 11-1 (with the only loss being to the clear #1 team in the country) or LSU winning the West? Tennessee would have also won the West if they were a member of it, plus beat Kelly heads up. Kelly has done a hell of a job there this year, but Tennessee's performance this year I think was even more unlikely than LSU's.

Granted the only way I think Kelly passes Huepel is if he wins the SEC out right, but from an outsider's perspective Kelly has been darn successful at LSU and has a good argument for SECCOTY.

What you described for us is literally what happened with LSU, but without a rebuild year.

They had 39 scholarship players in their bowl game last year.

We were predicted to be 3rd in the east, 5th in the SEC, we are second in both. They were predicted to be 5th in the west, 9th overall, they are first, and third. Even in national rankings we were supposed to be ranked, they were barely supposed to go bowling.

There is a contest, Huepel isnt the shoe in we want him to be.
