Ok, I know 08 is still a ways off but with midterms coming closer talk is increasing on the US presidental nominations. I'm specifically interested in what you all thought about the republican nomination... we've had some discussion specifically about McCain, but what about the others? McCain, to many, looks like the frontrunner, but at this point anything can change (remember McCain's lead early on back in 2000? or with the democrats... the early popularity of Dean?) There's also been a lot of talk about Rice and Giuliani... less mentioned but also thrown around are Frist, Brownback, Pataki, Huckabee, etc.

I'm curious to who you think will actually win the nomination or who you would want to win the nomination (with the latter, someone you'd actually want as president, not just who you would want to win since he'd be an easy defeat for the GOP)

I like to see Fred Thompson run. McCain has disappointed me as of late.

Well for one i have been a republican forever i guess, and i can say this for sure the party is about as split as i have ever seen it. Bush hasnt won over any of his party with his current agenda. If the Democrats are gonna win the white house again i would say 08 would be the year. But if u look at the Democrats they really dont have a real contender to beat any republican. Mccain would be the front runner if u ask me. Either way i dont think either party knows how to run this country anymore. :twocents:

The big issue with primaries (for both parties) is do you pick the one your party likes best or the one that is most electable?

I think McCain is electable but probably not conservative enough to win the primary.

I'd like to see a McCain/Lieberman ticket!

I'm kind of partial to Joe Biden at this point. It will interesting to see if he runs. Fire away...

Of course I can't say for sure but I find it highly doubtful that Biden will win the Republican nomination :ninja:

Conventional wisdom is Hillary vs. McCain, but when you consider that we haven't elected a member of the Senate to the White House in almost 50 years, you have to start looking at some Governors. I'm not even sure who they are, but they tend to make better candidates. If you think about it, 2+ years out from the elections of '92 and '00 most people had barely even heard the names Bill Clinton or George W. Bush.

McCain could have sailed in 2000 if it weren't for Rove and Reed dirty tricks. We'll see if they come back again. Frist has waffled and proven an uneffective Majority Leader. Giuiliani has 9/11 but has no conservative credentials to get him past the Primary. The Primary will be a fight for who is more conservative than the others. I think honestly McCain is perhaps the only one who can bridge a gap that has occurred lately. While many on the Right have dropped him, I think he's been the only one who stands on conservative principles while not drinking the Kool Aid.

And on the Dems side, you could see Gore pop back up. Hillary has to run this time but I don't think she can get it. Not unless things get worse within the next year. Lieberman is in trouble at home. Edwards played his hand one cycle too early. Bayh and Vilsack are good choices. Obama is needed too much where he is.

I think Hillary's too much of liability to get the nod from the Democrats, though Republicans seem to universally think she'll get the bid.

I've been hearing some positive things about Tim Kaine, the recently elected governor of Virginia, on the Democrat side.

I think he tends to stand on whatever will get his face in front of a camera.

Yeah, that probably won't work out will it? I'm talking on the Democratic ticket. You think I'm going to sit back and let you start an all Republican thread? I know you're trying to keep me out of the conversation, but it's just not gonna work. :biggrin2: I have way too many stupid things to say.

What do you think of Biden though? I've been pretty impressed with him when I've heard him speak and from what I've read about him. He was actually sticking up for Republicans the other day. I wasn't sure about that, but I like his honesty.

It's funny watching everybody sprint for the center in an election year. As for Biden, I wonder if getting caught plagarizing speeches the last time he ran for President will still be an issue for him?

If Obama has any intention of ever running he should do it quickly, before his legislative voting record becomes a sledge hammer for the republicans to pummel him with. No commentary about his positions necessarily, that is just what happens when you spend alot of years inside the beltway...

He's been the only consistent one there. Frist waffled. Romney's waffled. Giuiliani waffled. While the rest of the GOP is busy increasing the pork to their states and districts, McCain's been the one fighting it every time.

Have any suggestions GAVOL?

DUI's and drug use get swept under the rug for you....who cares right? Or tanking the business you were handed and having daddy's friends bailing you out?

guys i lived in arizona for awhile and mccain is the biggest idiot of any senator out there. actually listen to what the man stands for and then what he does and you will understand. frist is pretty close to the same way. on the democrat side same difference. i really don't like any of there canidates. if i had to pick one i would pick edwards, but he lacks star power. it will be close again. :bad:

Like I said earlier, I'm still looking. McCain is an intriguing possiblity, but I think history has shown that running a Senator with a long voting record is just not a good idea.

Frankly I wish a decent third party would come along. That won't happen since it takes money and only the existing two parties control the money pot. Until then, we deal with a group pulled around by the grapefruits by special interests.
