Who Do We Go After from the portal?

I think both Merk and Mac have the potential to be QBs we can win the SEC with or be a legitimate championship contender, but I don’t think they’re there this year with this roster. That being said I think we could squeak out a mediocre bowl with either of them.

I think Avery Johnson is really the only non SEC QB that we could get that keeps us in CFP contention, but with him being a Kansas kid he may not leave for something like 3.5M. Which is about what I imagine we’ll end up paying. I know his name has popped up a bunch, but is there actually something there or is it a pipe dream?

Do we go after a guy from a Big 12 school that runs a similar offense to ours? I don’t think Haynes King fits our offense and the SMU QB just doesn’t have the build for the SEC. Do we really just settle for bringing Moore back in an open competition and try to load up on weapons?

Luke Altmyer (Current Illinois QB, started career at Ole Miss. 4 star recruit out of high school) seems to be the most likely based on early rumors. Kid is mobile enough to make plays with his feet, solid passer.

Haynes King and Avery Johnson would both fit our system very well. Haynes king is very mobile, a hard nose runner for a QB, can also sling it. Johnson is an even better runner and more athletic than King, could improve as a passer though.

True. I feel certain they will add another qb out of the portal to provide some depth and competitiveness. We don't need our new qbs limited anymore than necessary. I wasn't overly impressed with Nico's wheels and his inability at times to use them. By the time he decided to run, the opportunity has passed. He didn't have the quickness Herndon and Dobbs had and not nearly as instinctive upstairs.
So if we get a portal QB this week, will we see several threads here about how disloyal to his previous school he is? How greedy? How it's all about the money?

Or will the school he heaves sound like we are about Nico right now.

Exactly. We are the good guys for showing Nico’s greedy daddy the door. Next week we are going to be the villains for dropping a bag on the doorstep of some kid at Arizona, TCU, KState, or Illinois.

if he left his previous school in order to get playing time or in order to get more money? or because his previous school told him to leave? cause those are all different things

Portal is loaded with QB's Florida State just lost one that stayed only one season was in the top 11 in his class. Heupel says were looking for a QB will that be a backup or someone to immediately take over as the starter? Both our QB's have a lot of potential just don't know if they are quite ready for this season. Going to be interesting to see who comes in at that position.

Do not. I say DO NOT sign someone with 6 -12 siblings with a crazy old man in charge of the tribe trying to live off the son‘s NIL earnings. It was a huge mistake from UT to take on this social experiment. Too bad Nico does not play basketball as he could move to Europe and escape this plight.

Why? We already have 2 very good ones on the roster, and another coming in next year.

We are the biggest hypocrites in the entire SEC.

Coach said, so that's enough for now. The next year guy, you're referring to, will not be eligible for vols this fall. Not wise to enter season with only 2 qbs on roster.

Old school UT fans remember all too well an opening day game against UCLA where Jerry Colquitt and Todd Helton went down, leaving a pair of true freshmen to battle it out for the job. It would be malfeasance not to sign at least one QB now. The guy who may come next year is utterly irrelevant to the 2025-2026 season. And I think recent events should show never to count on a player who seems like they'll be here next year.

Maybe so. But I remember some skinny kid from New Orleans coming in untested and doing OK. Having a little depth is a valid reason, but hiring a mercenary is just wrong. I don't like it in basketball and I' certainly not going to like it for this situation. If we do, I wouldn't be bothered one little bit if both Merk and McIntyre left in the next portal opening. I wouldn't blame them one bit.

We fans want loyalty, yet somehow that only applies to the players. Hypocrites.

Let'em work, let's see what happens. That guy from New Orleans you speak of started the season 3rd string...jus saying.

Not sure that's a fair comparison. If we approach a kid in the portal and sign him, that's the system. If the kids father comes shopping him to us before he's even in the portal and after his school had operated in good faith giving him a raise, that's a horse of a different color. I'd also think the way a kid and his family handles the departure also plays into it.

The way crew Nico handled this entire situation is most unsavory.

Some skinny kid with a great pedigree who luckily happened to be a generational talent, but sure let's try to pretend UT has always signed nothing but generational QB talent.

We lost our clear starter. We're currently one Hooker style injury from starting a true freshman who almost certainly is not Peyton Manning. That would be great but it would also be a miracle and David Cutcliffe is not in Knoxville anymore.

We are two Hooker style injuries from starting...... I've truly no idea. Let's recall that we HAD Peyton to turn to when =2= QBs went down.

We need a serviceable QB.
