Serviceable is fine. There is a difference in looking for that vs (and paying up for) Patrick MahomesSome skinny kid with a great pedigree who luckily happened to be a generational talent, but sure let's try to pretend UT has always signed nothing but generational QB talent.
We lost our clear starter. We're currently one Hooker style injury from starting a true freshman who almost certainly is not Peyton Manning. That would be great but it would also be a miracle and David Cutcliffe is not in Knoxville anymore.
We are two Hooker style injuries from starting...... I've truly no idea. Let's recall that we HAD Peyton to turn to when =2= QBs went down.
We need a serviceable QB.
As I mentioned above, I think they'll focus on the teams who run the offense that we are adopting this season for a replacement. Might not be the big name, 4m dollar man, but..It can't be anyone from the SEC due to conference rules.
If you are looking for a day 1 starter, it can't be someone you keep around for more than a year unless they are good enough you are willing to risk losing at least one of the guys you have.
It's going to be an interesting week to say the least.
This is the key difference. I want us to do it the right way, like you said approach someone actively in the porthole. Not be shady like Nick and go snooping around other programs' qb rooms. Not sure that's a fair comparison. If we approach a kid in the portal and sign him, that's the system. If the kids father comes shopping him to us before he's even in the portal and after his school had operated in good faith giving him a raise, that's a horse of a different color. I'd also think the way a kid and his family handles the departure also plays into it.
The way crew Nico handled this entire situation is most unsavory.
No one here should fault us ===IF=== we can snag Klubnik or Allar or another top QB who helps the team. Despite the attempts to diss him now, Nico wasn't chopped liver.Serviceable is fine. There is a difference in looking for that vs (and paying up for) Patrick Mahomes
No, get the best QB you can get and let the best man win..This is the key difference. I want us to do it the right way, like you said approach someone actively in the porthole. Not be shady like Nick and go snooping around other programs' qb rooms.
We've gained a lot of good will in how we handled this, we don't need to squander it by being hypocrites.
Get some depth and let's ride with Merk.
I say grab Gaston Moore back if possible or someone like that, that can just hand off if needed on an emergency situation.
Ride with Merk-Slinger & G-Mac, let the chips fall.
Personally I think we're going to be fine with either/both of them.
Hell, play 'em BOTH.
Spend the cash saved from Nico on a stud or 3 this week when the portal opens.
Nico always had tons of potential but never played like a 5 star at UT. I highly doubt Heupel is looking for a QB solely based on recruiting rankings.Checked it out, went down the list, and was horrified to see that all the available QBs in the portal were 3-stars. Then I saw a 5-star and immediately thought, "Yes! Here's our guy!"
it was nico.
