Who do we ultimately end up with in the portal

Who do we end up with? Not who you want, but who do we likely get?

Avery Johnson and Sam Leavitt are pipe dreams
Leavitt was apparently offered more than Nico was asking for by Oregon, which is his home state, and stayed with ASU. Dillingham's previous QBs are 1 year with Bo Nix when he was SEC freshman of the year, then to Florida State where he took Jordan Travis from the guy trying to switch positions to an NFL QB, then back to Nix at Oregon for the reclamation project.

In what world would Leavitt leave that situation when he's already getting 1st round buzz after a single season? With an All American caliber WR and All Conference TE back?

This will be the justification when we settle for a non impactful transfer, we will claim we offered millions

Do we really need anyone from the portal? We’d probably be better served using that money to keep the highly-touted QBs we already have in the room.

If I was Merk or Gmac I’d be pissed at the lack of confidence our fan base has in me. Guys at this level want the ball in their hands to show what they can do. Heck, Merk has a year under his belt just like Nico did last season. Do we really think he couldn’t do at least as well as Nico did last season? Nico’s +20 yards stats were awful.

I'm at the point that whoever is out there suited up against Syracuse is my guy. Even Smokey.

Transfer porthole has really ruined the off-season for me as a fan. Thank goodness for Vols baseball.
Yep. It's a coaching decision. NIL and the transfer portal are a damn mess. If you want to test the waters as a player then enter the portal, bring it into the light but NIL agents are out there shopping their guys in the dark.

IF Lanning alerted Josh that Nico was shopping himself great, all coaches should do that. I hate tampering. If a player is shopping himself to us without entering the portal then we should follow Lanning's lead...tell the player's coach.

I say they go out and get great WRs with the money Nico was getting paid.
That's great if they will actually do that. Looking down your nose at every player that comes out is old hat, it isnt working.

The TCU receiver, have we made contact? At this point with what happened to reshuffling of receivers, what is the plan for bringing in help?

If I was GMac Id be concerned that Georgia DL will break me in half.

Good QBs want to learn, get bigger, by redshirting.

“The state of Iowa and our community has given so much love to me and my family and we wanted to find a way to give back,” Becht said in a statement at the time. “Perry has gone through so much in the past year and this was a small way to show support and provide a fun day for the kids in Perry.”

He's NOT leaving

Yeah I don't like the tampering. I really don't want us to go down that road. It would feel pretty hypocritical to me. Plus burn up all the goodwill we built over the last 2 weeks.

No sneaking around other qb rooms for a fella.

GMAC is the better QB, but he isn't ready yet. He needs 20 more pounds at least. Both were going to be backups this year. If we can get a good QB with experience from portal, that's what we need to do. They understood they weren't going to play much this year had Nico stayed.

They need another QB whether he comes in as a starter or not. You need three at a minimum

We swung for the fences when we gave Nico his NIL deal. It feels like 10 years ago.
Why would anyone expect we wouldn't do that again in this situation.

I don't think young QBs respect UT for what we did to open up the NIL marketplace. It is Weird some commentators and forumites think that is a thing.
Young QBs do like that we have pretty deep pockets and our last 2 starters are in the NFL. They get lots of attention for backups. That speaks to a talented QB who needs a big stage to get national attention. Heupel has a decent track record getting guys in to the NFL and it is getting better each season. He also has a good track record getting QBs attention. That will be a strong reason to come to Knoxville.
