This is going to sound like a "negavol" or "anti-CCM" post but it's really not. I think it's a fair question.

You have Bruce Pearl who has been working on Stokes for quite some time. Pearl is also responsible for putting the program in position to recruit and ultimately grab a player like Stokes. But Pearl also put the program back a few years with the whole BBQgate scandal which was very damaging to the Stokes recruitment. One could argue it nearly cost us him if it weren't for....

....Coach Martin who came into a disaster situation left by Pearl and had to put the pieces back together. He's had to prepare his team while trying to recruit and develop a relationship with a kid he didn't even know and try to sell him on his system and coaching style all in just under 8 months whereas most of the other recruiters at Ark, UK, Memphis, etc have spent years recruiting him.

I think the correct answer is they both were pivotal in landing stokes... but for the sake of this thread... vote for who you think was more responsible for signing Stokes.

Both but more Pearl. Stokes wouldn't have considered UT this late in the game had Pearl not laid the ground work

Who cares as long as Tennessee has Stokes. And Stokes will be playing for coach Martin. That's like asking who is fault for the BBQ at Pearl's house. Pearl for haveing them over and lieing. Or someone dumb enough to take a pic of Craft being there.

Had more to do with the situations than the coaches.

If he could have played the rest of high school ball, I think he would have gone to Memphis or Kentucky.

But the best situation for him now was Tennessee or Florida. Which is still a great battle to have won on.

Doesn't he have a sister that goes to Tennessee? Also he is bff with Cameron Clear. I think he wanted to go to Tennessee from the start.

Pearl may have laid groundwork, but with the current state of the program and new coaching staff, he could have easily went elsewhere.

Forgot about this... good point.

At the end of May, Stokes wasn't taking Coach Martin's calls. Tobias intervened and persuaded him to give the new coach a listen. From there, Coach Martin sold himself, but without that nudge from Tobias, he doesn't get the chance.

Martin. He is the coach. Stokes knew Pearl was out. Martin. Martin. Martin. Martin is UT's coach. I wish Pearl still was, but Martin is. Martin started recruiting him again and sealed the deal. So that means credit Martin and none other than Martin.

The only time something was for certain was when coach Martin was in & that was when the deal was solidified!!!!! Pearl put in the effort & gained some good ground, but if he was still coach, Stokes was headed to Memphis!!!! Stokes & his family really felt comfortable with coach Martin & that sealed the deal!!!!!

All of Pearl's worked was destroyed with Stokes when Pearl got fired. Martin started with a clean slate and Stokes said as much through out the interviews during his recruitment. Tennessee was completely out of it at one point. This had nothing to do with Pearl and everything to do with Martin and the fact that Memphis didn't have a scholarship for him in January.

Anyone who thinks differently is a Bruce Pearl homer or troll.

Coach Pearl baited the hook and would have brought Stokes on board had he remained our coach, but Coach Martin took Bruce's place and reeled him in. So, obviously the credit goes to both Bruce and Cuonzo.

The one most responsible for Stokes cimmitting to U. T. is the full rosters of Memphis, Arkansas & Ky. Had any of those teams been able to give him a roster spot in Jan., I feel he would have chosen one of them rather than us.

I'm pretty sure Arkansas had a spot.

Besides, Jarnell isn't going to commit to play 12 games of basically a meaningless season. He's not that dumb or shortsighted.
